Missy Callahan
Lost Souls
Five years before Ash Ketchem was allowed to catch Pokemon, a single girl sat alone in the large stadium in Johto, the lights fading away. The crowd had left the stadium, leaving the poor little one all alone sitting in the dome, her Machamp's head in her lap.
"Oh Choppy," she whispered, "I'm so sorry. I didn't know. I didn't know you were this sick. Why didn't you just disobey me?"
"Ma-champ" it said weakly, reaching its hand up and running it down her tear stained face.
"Choppy no!" she wailed, "The nurse said there's nothing you can do but try and rest. Don't waste your strength on me. Try to heal yourself, I can't go on without you!"
"Champ…"
"Please Machamp," she said. She quickly went to her belt and took out a few of her other, weaker Pokemon, her two Eevee, her Larvitar, her Cyndaquil, her Pidgy, and her Flaffy, which followed her around. The six Pokemon came up beside the dying Machamp and nuzzled their fallen comrade.
"Champ!" she said.
"Please don't. I'm so sorry Choppy. I didn't know. I don't want you to go, please!"
"Machamp… Machamp Machamp machamp champ."
"Choppy!" she said, but it was too late. The battle had been long and hard. Choppy had fought against a tough Dragonite. Choppy was good, better than the Dragonite, but when the dragon used Hyper-beam, Choppy was finished. The fans had left the stadium; cheering for the new league champion, and hating the girl who let her Machamp weaken.
Machamp's eyes fluttered for a moment, and closed. Missy fell forward onto her Machamp's chest, and cried, openly, for the first time in years. Nurse Joy finally came running out, but Missy raised a hand to stop her. It was too late. She stood up, and beckoned to her Pokemon.
"Missy, I know this is tough for you, but you'll battle better then ever next time!" said Joy.
"With what?" asked Missy, her eyes full of tears, "I've lost Choppy, my first Pokemon. She was the best I had. My others all hate me!"
"Missy, you're a great trainer, you'll battle back better than ever."
"I want the great Professor Oak to get the rest of my Pokemon."
"What about these six?"
"I don't know."
"They like you."
"They don't KNOW me."
"Take them away and let them get to know you Missy."
"I don't know."
"It is best if you leave. I know your father, and your brother. They're going to be merciless when they find out that Choppy died."
"I know."
"Listen, the woods to the north are rather unexplored. Go out there and find out what you need to be the greatest trainer."
"I don't know."
"Trust me."
"But I'm not a great trainer."
"You're father gave you a rejected Pokemon, and you turned it into the greatest fighter ever. You shared a deep connection with Choppy."
"I forced her to fight. I didn't love her."
"Fall in love with your new Pokemon. Fall in love with these Eevee's, and the others. Then, maybe, you will be the greatest EVER."
"Thanks Joy."
"Go Missy."
"I'll see you."
"I know," she called as Missy walked slowly out of the lights, and towards the forest, her Pokemon at her heels.
