I wrote this with the help of my good friend Identity Crisis. Annabeth won't stop reading her book, Leo got bored, and Percy won't be getting any blue chocolate-chip cookies.
"Annabeth," whined Percy. "When do you ever not read?"
"Huh?" Annabeth was not paying attention at all to Percy; just to her awesome new architecture book. "Didn't hear that."
Percy sighed. "Exactly." He watched the other children on the playground enviously - Piper and Hazel grinning like maniacs as they trounced several boys at soccer, Piper's brunette hair in a single, long braid, Thalia and Luke, third graders, nice ones that still talked to them, were playing hopscotch, Jason playing basketball with Frank, and Leo . . . Leo was walking towards them.
Maybe if I ignore him, he'll go away. Percy thought. Leo was his friend, of course, but Percy's mom had offered him three chocolate-chip cookies, the blue kind, if he got Annabeth to play.
Leo looked like he was up to no good. He was smiling and his hands were hidden behind his back. "Hey Percy, Annabeth," said Leo, almost purring with pleasure. "Do you guys like spiders?"
Percy responded in the typical fashion of a six year old boy. "Spiders? Cool!"
But Annabeth stumbled and fell off of her bench. "S-s-s-sp-sp-" Annabeth couldn't finish her sentence. Her throat closed up and she felt herself scamble backwards into a tree.
"Annabeth, are you afraid of spiders?" Leo was smiling mischevously.
Annabeth screamed at the word "spider".
"Stop that! You did this on purpose!" Percy started pushing Leo away, but he just slipped under Percy's arms and approached Annabeth. Now standing behind Leo, Percy saw what was in Leo's hands: dozens of tiny spiders. They were moving, but didn't really seem to be alive. Percy watched Leo go for the kill. He held out his hands and threw all the little spiders on Annabeth.
Naturally, she started screaming her head off. Annabeth got up and ran in circles, shaking her arms and head. After a little while, Percy ran in to help her calm down. She wouldn't stop squirming once in Percy's arms.
"Annabeth, I'm trying to - OW! Stop punching me! It hurts! I'm trying to help!"
"Huh?" Annabeth replied, calming for a mere second before screaming again. Percy covered his ears with his hands. This so isn't worth the cookies.
She seemed to calm down a little while later. "I'm sorry," She whispered. "I'm scared of spiders."
"I kinda figured," said Percy. "So . . . now can we play?"
Annabeth deliberated for a moment. "No," she answered.
Percy sighed. It was going to be a very long recess indeed.
