Disclaimer: I own neither the song "Call to arms" (Manowar) nor the film 300. The quote at the end is from the memorial for the battle.
Call To Arms
The call went out through Sparta – King Leonidas is looking for 300 of the best warriors, to fight against the Persians.
Now they stand assembled, 300 of Sparta's finest, in all their glory. Their shields gleaming in the sun, their long red cloak flying in the wind.
They are a fearsome and awe-inspiring force to behold as they march to the Hot Gates.
When they see us they will run for their lives
To the end they will pay for their lies
So long did we wait, now we are home
They reach their destiny and meet a small army of other Greeks – potters, weavers, butchers, they are no fighters. Not like the Spartans who have trained their whole life for this.
They survey the vast Persian army, but they show no fear. They are Spartans and they are at home on the battlefield.
Here once again there's a battle to fight
Gather together for the sound and the might
So long did we wait, now we are home
The Persian attack, but the Spartans stand firm. The ground is drenched in Persian blood; the huge war beasts are of no use here. Leonidas and his 300 fight without fear, they fight for Sparta.
At the end of the first day, countless Persian lie dead at their feet.
Now we will fight for the kingdom, fighting with steel
Kill all of them, their blood is our seal
Fight till the last of the enemy is dead
Ride through their blood that we gladly have shed
Once again, the Spartans charge.
Immortals – Leonidas puts their name to the test. It turns out they are not immortal after all. One by one they fall at the Spartan spears and swords. Metal clashing against metal, the screams of the wounded, the sounds of the battle is all that is heard on the battlefield.
I now issue the call, are you ready to fight - yeah
Fight altogether as one for the right
To be free once again - tonight we will win
The other Greeks were to cowardly and left when they heard of the betrayal. Now only Leonidas and his 300 Spartans stand their ground. They do not fear death.
They will fight till their last breath, they fight for Sparta.
Their shields held high, they stand in a circle and await their end.
I can see by the look that you have in your eyes
You came here for metal, to fight and to die
Defenders of steel, now we are home
The Spartans are surrounded, there is no hope – but they do not surrender, they will die fighting.
Leonidas refuses to pay homage to the Persian God-king, he will not submit. Nor will his men.
There isn't one among them who will not gladly put down his life for his King – and Sparta. And Leonidas is ready to do the same for his men. They will die for him as he will die for them.
Until the last they fight, pierced with arrows, they still do not give up.
Fight for the kingdom bound for glory
Armed with a heart of steel
I swear by the brothers who stand before me
To no man shall I kneel
Their blood is upon my steel.
Leonidas is the last to stand – countless arrows pierce his body as he finally falls.
He fought for his Queen, he fought for freedom, he fought for Sparta.
"Go tell the Spartans, thou that passest by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie."
