A/N: Here is another Catie/Remus song fic that will take place in a sequel to Marauders' Dawn, its sixth year.

Disclaimer: Anything HP you recognize I do not own, 'So Close' belongs to whoever wrote it on the Enchanted soundtrack…Basically it belongs to Disney. :p

Tonight was the beloved Christmas Eve dance; neither Catie nor Remus had dates. Not even with each other. Peter had gone home that year for Christmas, James and Sirius both had dates from Hufflepuff, and Lily was going with a Ravenclaw. Catie had been dancing almost the entire time with Remus, smiling and enjoying the evening. Then things slowed down a bit and a slow sweet song began to play as Remus held Catie in his arms as they waltzed.

You're in my arms, and all the world is calm
The music playing on for only two
So close together and when I'm with you
So close to feeling alive

Catie smiled and rested her head on Remus' shoulder; Remus rested his chin on top of her head also smiling.

A life goes by romantic dreams must die
So I bid mine goodbye and never knew
So close was waiting, waiting here with you
And now, forever, I know all that I wanted to hold you
So close

Remus frowned, how true this song was. He pulled Catie tighter to him, and he scanned the room. James and Sirius were both snogging their dates in separate corners of the Great Hall. Catie sighed happily, and wrapped her arms around his waist.

So close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this one's not pretend
Now you're beside me and look how far we've come
So far, we are, so close

They were so close to reaching their ending, but would it be happy? Was this all just a dream? Catie closed her eyes, would Remus understand now how much he meant to her?

The music played instrumentally for several seconds and Remus twirled Catie about the room, both of their faces frozen in a smile,

Oh, how could I face the faceless days
If I should lose you now?

Someone cut into their dance and asked Catie to dance with him, Remus was shocked at the jealousy he felt raging inside himself as Catie answered 'Yes.' Slowly he walked away off the dance floor to the pumpkin punch.

We're so close to reaching that famous happy end
Almost believing this was not pretend
Let's go on dreaming though we know we are
So close, so close, and still so far

Catie watched Remus let her be swept away by some prat that just wanted to snog. She felt her hopes die when he did nothing to intervene. Suddenly Catie felt a tang of regret for the dress she picked. They were so close, best friends, yet when it came to their feelings they were so far apart.

A/N: What's that? You were expecting a happy ending? Sorry, not in this but remember this isn't the end of anything so it's not meant to be happy.
