Be Objective
"Booth, you have to remain objective!" Brennan insisted firmly. "You can't ignore a suspect just because of your opinion of him. All of the forensic evidence gathered points as much to the victim's boyfriend as it does her mother!"
Booth kept right on walking, ignoring the fact that Brennan was lagging behind him and struggling to catch up. At the moment, he kind of wanted to get away from her. "Yeah, Bones, but one look at the guy and you know that he couldn't have killed her," he replied. "The emotional and psychological evidence says that it wasn't the boyfriend."
He knew the moment he said that, it was coming.
"I hate psychology," she said. "It's a weak science."
Yep. She didn't disappoint.
He held up his pointer finger that he knew she could see over his shoulder. "Ah, yes, but just because you don't like psychology doesn't mean you can ignore it! Your opinion of it doesn't make it any less a science!"
He thought she might concede the point—it was, after all, a good one—but she didn't.
"It isn't based on any real physical evidence, but instead pure conjecture. It's—"
Booth groaned. He got tired of having this same old pointless, fruitless fight all the time, and of hearing her spout the exact same argument every single time. He really did.
He stopped walking and whirled around to face Brennan. Stunned by the suddenness, she narrowly avoided crashing into him. Instead, she came dangerously close to him—in more ways than one.
Booth just said the first thing that came to mind. "What would you do if I kissed you right now?" he asked. "Because, so help me, Bones…" That ought to shut her up real nice.
He'd never seen her so dumbstruck as she looked in that moment. She just blinked. And then recovered quickly. "Booth, that would—"
Determined to shut her up this time, he leaned forward and followed through on his threat by pressing his lips to hers. At first, all he wanted to do was keep her quiet. But then, as the seconds passed, Booth felt so much more.
On the opposite side of the kiss, Brennan was surprised, tensed up, relaxed, returned the kiss, then tensed up again, and finally broke away.
"Booth, you can't—" she started.
He rolled his eyes at her. "Bones, just for once would you stop thinking and being objective? Be subjective just this one time—and shut up while you're at it."
This time, even though she knew what was coming, he leaned in and she didn't back away.
