Phong watched as Dot left silently and listened as her soft footsteps padded down the hallway and into the night. Yes, this was a rare time indeed, when he could convince Dot to leave the seemingly safe confines of her office and get some much needed rest. He would be going to recharge soon, too, but first...
He turned over some files on his desk. Some recent system scans, a report on Lost Angles, something about how business was going at the docks. He was sure Dot would like to look over some of these in the morning. And User knows she'll be up here bright and early in the morning ready to work, to get away from reality if only for a little while.
He rolled over to put back the Lost Angles report to where it came from and couldn't help but thinking that Dot was a nice mixture of both of her parents. Like her father, she was a hard worker and extremely intelligent. On the other hand, she also inherited her mother's soft heart and infamous stubbornness. So it seemed natural that when her mother died shortly after Enzo's initialization that Dot was bereaved and frustrated at first at the prospect at having to help out more at home.
Phong was worried for her, and told Welman so. He assured Phong that Dot was doing well, but after awhile even Welman couldn't deny it. While her friends were off dating cute boys and thinking about marriage and some even having babies, Dot was becoming more family oriented, getting closer to her father and baby brother as if they would disappear suddenly like her mother.
And then, it happened. Phong sighed as he picked up another file as if to read it, then set it back down so he could ponder some more. It changed everyone's life, most of all Dots'. She was suddenly forced with the idea that she'd be living a cold, lonely life with the exception of her brother. It took her awhile to finally see that Enzo wasn't just her brother, but a survivor like herself, someone that needed strength from her and that she needed strength back.
So it wasn't a surprise that she was apprehensive when Bob came back as a guardian. Phong thought his sunny optimism would be a good thing to help the healing system, but Dot couldn't understand how anyone could live by themselves without the support of others, why anyone would want to. But Phong could see that after Enzo was instantly attracted to him even Dot couldn't resist his "charm", as Bob liked to put it.
A soft rap on the door broke through Phong's thoughts.
"You almost done Phong? We're just about to lock everything up for the night." A security binome informed him.
"Yes, yes child, I was almost done with these files anyway." He watched through the door as the guard continued down the hallway, then rolled back to the desk where the files were laying and picked them up carefully.
Even though games and viruses and codemasters and whatnot always threw their lives into chaos, Phong had known Dot long enough to see that she finally found someone she truly liked. Her far off dream of settling down and finally having her own family to share with Enzo might not be so far off after all.
He chuckled. Poor Bob, he thought as he put away the files safely for the night. He walked to the door and turned around to look back at the seemingly empty room.
Yes, maybe someday everything will be alright, and with that he clicked off the light.
