It was only supposed to be a simple bust of a simple fraud ring but things went wrong and they were now facing death as the simple crime was hiding a slave ring.
"Now lookie here sweet-cheeks," the leader told Batgirl, a knife to her throat. Both Batlings, Robin and Batgirl, were bound and gagged. The gang was quite good really, "someone's gonna go in that fish tank," he pointed to a large see through vat of crystal clear water, "and they ain't gonna come out. I'm giving you the choice, either you or your boyfriend… who's it gonna be?
The girl beneath the mask, Cassandra Cain, looked to her boyfriend before motioning to herself, giving her acquiescence that it would be her. Tim Drake, the boy who became Robin when the sun went down, saw this and doubled his efforts to break free from his bindings. She couldn't do this! But he was stuck watching as they encumbered her feet with quick dry cement and dragged her up on the tank's platform, before pushing her in.
She hit with a splash, instantly sinking to the bottom. She fought but as her air ran out she went limp.
Subsequently, a burst of inhuman strength came over Tim and he literally broke free. An exploding batarang lodged itself in the vat's side, the timer quickly counting down to zero before blowing, breaking the tank open. She was washed out among glass shards; she wasn't breathing.
Meanwhile Robin was busy teaching the stupid thugs that had captured them why it was a bad idea to piss off a Bat. It was irrelevant that they outnumbered him thirteen to one, that they were armed and he was not and/or they all had at least a hundred pounds even and a few centimeters on him. He dispelled each easily and their fellow crooks wouldn't begrudge them the fact that they thought that they had angered a Superboy instead of a Robin. One tried to be stealthy, sneaking up on the young superhero, but Robin sensed him and simply backhandedly punched him into unconsciousness. After that the rest fled and he turned his attention to Batgirl.
She hadn't woken up or resumed breathing. Immediately he fell to his knees beside her, ignoring the shards of glass impaling his knees, and began administrating CPR, cursing their predicament. She had been a pauper but now she was his princess. He couldn't lose her.
Minutes ticked by and his hopes began to die. He might not be able to bring her back this time. His arms began to protest the CPR but he powered through it.
Just as he was about to give up and swear bloody revenge in her name she sputtered to life, throwing up water.
He smiled, tears of relief starting to fall. He pulled her close and this is how the police found them.
