Uniform Troubles
"It's weird!" stated Adrienne Grey.
"Well, maybe it's a little bit different but you'll get used to it!" tried her mother, turning the plain black robe between her fingers and trying to smile. "That is what everyone else will be wearing and you don't want to feel like a stranger at your own school, do you?"
Adrienne shook her head but glared at the offending piece of fabric. "Yes, but…tbat…I'll look like some kind of a ghost out of a children's story!"
"Adrienne Marianne Grey, you are going to a school of magic to learn magic and all you can say is you don't like the uniform?" her mother was getting tired of the argument and dropped the robe back on the floor. "Are you really going to tell me you won't go to this school because of this? You'll miss out on all the things that nice professor McGonagall told you about just because you don't like the look of an item of clothing?"
Adrienne bit the inside of her lip and shook her head. "Of course not…"
"So be a good girl and get the rest of your things packed and then we'll be off to the train station!" Lilian Grey sighed looking down at her child and wondering where she'd gotten all that stubbornness from. She had definitely not been like that. Besides, all that fuss over an unifrom. It was like she'd been asked to wear a potato sack…
"Look, honey, I know all these changes are hard and the Wizarding world seems strange and odd," she'd certainly had quite a shock their first time in Diagon Alley and among all the pointy hats and spells and flying and talking objects, "But you'll get used to it and I really think you'll grow to like it. The professor did say that you were always meant to be a part of their world!"
Adrienne sat on the Hogwarts Express and stared out the window as meadows and forests flashed by and sighed. She didn't want to look back at her black robes. She missed the school that her parents had prepared her for with their pink pinafore dresses and white shirts…But black robes meant her life would completely different and Adrienne was unsure if different was good…
Someone shook her by the shoulder. "Stop dreaming, Addie! We're nearly there, get your robes on!" Tracey Davis, another first year she'd met on the train, smiled down at her, already wearing hers. Adrienne hesitated but then thought back to her mum at the train station: "Darling, you are about to embark on the biggest adventure of your life, are you really going to be scared of by black fabric?" No, she was not. She was Adrienne Grey and she was going to be alright!
She donned the uniform just as the train came to a halt. Tracey offered her a hand and they stepped out and it felt almost exciting to take the first step…ZING! "Get down!"
Something struck her and she fell. After a moment Tracey helped her up and they could see an older student getting heavily scolded by a tall teacher. "Stinging hex. He wasn't aiming at you but lucky it hit your robes!" commented Tracey.
Adrienne looked down and saw the fabric slightly smoking but undamaged. "Huh?"
"Yeah, they are made do endure minor spell damage?"
"Like armor? AWESOME!" Maybe they had some benefits after all.
