Disclaimer: I DON'T own NCIS or any of it's characters but a girl can dream...
Author's note: I just watched YANKEE WHITE and I remembered what made me a KIBBS fan in the first place! This isn't a song fic but the original idea did spring from listening to "You Could Be Happy" by Snow Patrol.(I don't own anything to do with them either just in case a disclaimer is needed on that too!) Plus this is a post twilight, post Hiatas part two,Gibbs hasn't come back yet as I know he will! Any Buffy fans will get a slight reference in here. Just me enjoying what I do!
Gibbs sat back in his chair, he watched the sun set over the ocean. Usually he didn't have the patience or the inclination to do such a thing but now he had all the time in the world and not a single thing to do with it. He flashed back to a certain conversation he had had with Kate about embroidering cushions and smiled. Now there's a hobby he could take up, putting every rule he ever had for living his life on to cushions... He didn't even need to start to know how that endevour would end.
Thinking of Kate made Gibbs' throat burn and he had a sudden need for a boat, a basement and a bottle of Jack. He'd loved her so much and now that she was gone he couldn't help but think how things would have been different if he had actually told her.
His face twisted into a grim smile, and he already knew the answer to that question, nothing.
Nothing would have changed. Kate could have recipricated his feelings but she still would have been on the roof top, she still would have taken the bullet for him, Ari would still have shot her.
Because it was the right thing to do, she wasn't the type to sherk her duties, and she certainly wasn't the type to fail to protect a loved one.
It seemed like a lifetime ago, the shot on the roof, watching her body hit the ground in slow motion. It seemed like a lifetime ago he'd seen her body on a slab down in Autopsy, a lifetime ago that he'd watched her coffin be lowered into the ground. Only a year today. The twenty fourth of May had once been just another day, now it was a date for ever engraved in his mind.
It was the day he first questioned how he'd lived his life since losing Shannon and Kelly.
What would Kate think of him now, was she even thinking of him, could she? He hoped that where ever she was she was at peace. What ever that was, Gibbs didn't think he'd ever experienced it.
So he thought of something he ahd experienced, however long ago. He poured himself a drink and raised the glass towards the sunset, to words that he could fully comprehend.
"For all I know you could be happy, and I hope you are Kate." And he downed his drink with a smile. "And this one's for you."
So tell me what you think!
