Midnight Snack
Follow-up scene to "Pressure 165": Will Johnny and Roy try Johnny's concoction?
He had his arm over his eyes, but Johnny Gage wasn't anywhere near asleep.
Man, maybe I should have tried that stuff.
He could still see that green mess in the pot. He hadn't wanted any; neither had Roy, but Captain Stanley and the rest of the guys had loved it.
There's still some left.
Johnny sighed. He knew he had to try it.
Awww, man…He sighed again and sat up. He looked around.
All seemed to be quiet. He could hear Chet Kelly's snoring.
Good…..I have enough to worry about without that clown getting on my case, Johnny thought.
He looked over at Roy….Wait a minute.
Where was Roy?!
He wasn't in his bunk. Johnny looked toward the locker room; Roy didn't seem to be there, either.
Maybe he's getting some milk….
Johnny put on his turnout pants and shuffled off to the kitchen. The light was on.
Johnny heard the slurping sound even before he walked in.
He popped his head into the kitchen doorway. There was Roy, eating a bowl of the concoction.
Johnny grinned. "Caught ya."
Roy looked up, the spoon still halfway in his mouth.
"Uhhh," he mumbled through the spoon and the food.
Johnny chuckled. "Very profound."
Roy swallowed and smiled. "This is good, Johnny. I mean really good."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Johnny went to the cabinets and drawers and got a soup bowl and a spoon. He took a seat next to Roy, who used a ladle to give Johnny some of the dish.
Johnny took a tentative taste.
"What do you think, Chef?"
Johnny half-laughed, half-scoffed at Roy's question. Then he thought a moment.
"You know, this isn't bad!" Johnny said through a mouthful. He took another taste. "Not bad at all," he added through two mouthfuls.
"Yeah, that's what I thought," Roy agreed.
"For an accident, that is," Johnny continued.
"Well, some amazing inventions have come from accidents," Roy said.
"That's true."
Roy smiled. "And you were nice to me when I made my food."
"You mean your Beef Ernest Borgnine?" Johnny gave a wicked grin.
"That's beef bourguignon, wise guy," Roy responded. "You liked that and my eggs lupine."
"Well, they were pretty good."
The paramedic team ate quietly for the next few minutes. Johnny sighed. "Man, how could I ever make something this good again that those guys will like?"
Roy leaned back and thought. "You know, there are cooking classes around town," he said. "Joanne took one once. You might sign up. Some can handle crazy schedules like ours."
Johnny considered this. "Huh," he said.
Roy smiled. "Lots of girls take cooking classes," he said.
Johnny turned his head expectantly. "They do?"
Roy successfully resisted a laugh. "That's what Joanne told me."
Johnny gave his trademark toothy grin. "Guess I'll sign up tomorrow!"
