Long ago, on a farm in seventeenth century England, lived two lovers,Arthur and 's father died when she was born;their family which consisted of them and Amelia's mother, were poor and starving. One day,Arthur decided he should sneak over to the farm next door to steal three or four eggs from the witch. This continued for three or four days, until he was caught by the witch;she turned him into a rooster. When he did not come home, Amelia became worried and went out to look for him. She snuck into the witch's henhouse and immediately a tawny rooster began pecking at her shoes, but she shooed him next day, she went back again and the same rooster came up to her and she shooed him away again.

The third day,the same rooster came and pecked at her shoes again. This time however, she started despairing and weeping over her missing love, not knowing that he was a rooster. Eventually, she went home deciding to ask the witch for the tawny colored rooster. The witch had her do three tasks to prove that rooster was indeed her love. The first night, she had to cook supper for the witch. The second night, she had to draw water from the well. The third night, she had to plant a garden. When this was all over, she was permitted to pick up the tawny rooster and make him a necklace of white roses, which turned him back into a human.
