Beta: cygna_hime over on LJ. Thanks for catching my weird tense change!
Notes: I wrote this in September of last year on livejournal for iki_teru's birthday, but I've only just now gotten around to posting it here. Enjoy!
There is a box on the beach.
Correction: there is a very large box on the beach.
It is covered in pale yellow wrapping paper, and someone has tied a pink bow around it that ends in a poof at the top. The effect is rather spoiled by the fact that whoever positioned the box seems to have forgotten about tides, vis. they come in.
The box appears unhappy about this eventuality; you can tell because it appears to be arguing. With itself.
"It's not my fault."
"Quiet. Yes it is."
"The ocean didn't say it was going to rise."
"It should have sent you a note? Shh."
"Yeah!"
"We're a box, remember? Boxes don't talk."
Having apparently run out of conversation topic, the box (although it seems safe to assume it's a present) falls silent.
"Hey, Riku…"
Or not.
"Do farts think?"
"No."
"Okay! I hear footsteps."
"Then SHUT UP!"
From without comes a Sound. It is the Sound of someone patiently following a hand-drawn map left on their bedside table and attempting not to laugh because as soon as the set foot on the island there is a way to the easily visible prize that is shorter, simpler, and doesn't involve circling the Cove three times. The footsteps of said Sound-maker near the box, and pause.
After a few moments spend contemplating the note on aforesaid map imploring the reader to run for their life in a slightly more elegant and angular hand than the rest, the amused map follower steps forward and takes hold of the lid.
"SURPRISE!"
