It was not at all true that Temperance Brennan needed "the proper atmosphere of frivolity" to sing. In fact, that was about as far from the truth as one could get.
Dr. Temperance Brennan liked to sing in the shower. After all, it had useful qualities such as resonance, privacy…
Really, she was so embarrassed by the topic that she wasn't quite sure why she had brought it up at all. Except that for the past few years, more often than not it was Booth who gave her a reason to sing – a reason that had been missing since her parents left.
Booth was her reason, and sometimes she wanted so badly for him to know, but that didn't stop her from being embarrassed. It was illogical, really; she knew for a fact that she sang well. But up until then it had been a private pleasure of hers, one that perhaps she wasn't ready to share yet. And so maybe she was pleased to finally let it go when they didn't believe her.
She hadn't expected Booth to set it all up for her, "the proper atmosphere of frivolity" that she had said she needed. But she should have. It was the kind of thing Booth would do.
There were her friends and colleagues to cheer her on – Dr. Sweets, the "squints" and Booth himself. He smiled at her, and she knew she would give in. More importantly, she knew that she would enjoy herself.
But that was the problem – she had been enjoying herself. She had been happily showing off for Booth, soaking up his attention and singing her heart out when the gunshot cracked through the air, cut through the notes of the song and buried itself in Booth's chest.
For a long time after that, Temperance Brennan didn't sing at all.
A/N: This started out as a fun little fic about Bones singing and turned into something completely different. Let me know what you thought, please! Reviews are always welcome!!
