Unspoken: A Liason Ficlet
By Evergreen
Elizabeth was on her last rounds of the night and purposely left Michael's room for last. She knew Jason was still there and she wanted a few minutes to speak to him. She scribbled in her previous patients' vital stats in his file and quietly closed his door behind her. She walked slowly towards her last destination, a sense of dread filling her up. Jake or Cam could just as easily been in Michael's place- wrong place, wrong time. It scared her to no end. She looked in the window of the door before slowly opening it, not wanting to disturb any of the occupants. Even the normally chilly relationship she had with Michael's mother, Carly, had changed to more of one of equals, mother to mother, within the last week. A hush had settled over the room, as if speech would somehow ruin the time each person spent with Michael. Elizabeth glanced over at the machines and recorded the heart rate, respirations, and oxygen saturation levels. All the same, as they have been for a week. She could feel Jason's eyes boring into the back of her head and she turned to meet his blue eyes.
His eyes were red and wet from unshed tears. Something inside her crumbled and she had to touch him. He stood up as she came to him and they stood grasping each other as if it would make the world right again. He turned his head and breathed her name into her ear. She shivered. She could hear his heart pounding through his t-shirt, she could feel the warmth of his skin. She resisted the temptation to inhale deeply to infuse herself with his scent. She missed him so much her chest hurt when she thought about him. She felt as if she were only complete when he was with her. In the quiet, they said all they needed to say. He shifted and moved his hands to caress her face. He tipped her chin and kissed her mouth, tenderly and deeply. Michael didn't move, couldn't move. Elizabeth looked into Jason's eyes one more time and slipped out of the room. And felt like her heart stayed with him in that room. She walked back to the nurses' station to check out. She had to get her boys from the daycare facility downstairs. She sighed and pushed the button for the elevator. The doors opened and she walked in. She turned, pushed the button for the second floor, and looked back into the hallway. Jason stood there watching. The doors closed.
