I took off the other direction away from Cammi and the others, making a sharp left towards the first door. It was a narrow maze of doors and rooms. No lights down any hallways. The only string of comfort I had with me was my flashlight, but I dropped it when slamming the door, narrowly avoiding getting attacked by a psychotic ghost. I felt my way blindly down the never-ending hallway of doors, having no idea where he is or if the others made it through already. I was so nervous I forgot to breathe. I gasped for air, almost coughing and yelled out. "Cammi!?" I practically screamed, "Where are you!?". "We made it through! Just keep feeling around, Chara!" a voice called back. It was Cammi's voice. I nodded into the darkness, reassuring myself I could make it through. I took another shaking breath and continued walking. I carefully listened in the silence for the sound of breathing or footsteps. It felt like a vividly lucid dream or a nightmare.
But this was real.
I was in a maze being hunted down by a very irritated ghost that we invaded his privacy. If I make it out, I get to live.
And if I don't...
My heart dropped to my stomach, I think I got acid reflex for a moment. I saw his unforgettable purple hair flash past the corridor I was heading for. I stumbled back into the corner and slid to my knees. I can't do this. I can't. I can't. I can't-
He stood down the hallway, his arm outstretched towards me, a blank expression on his face. I blinked, large tears dripping from my face and onto the cold hard floor. His head nodded ever so slightly to me and reached his arm out further. I shakily stood up, walking slowly towards him. His expression changed to a gentle comforting grin. I eased myself enough to reach for his hand. I phased through him.
Why did this catch me off guard? He's a ghost. Of course your hand would go through his.
He suddenly grabbed my wrist firmly, making me shriek and trying to jerk back. He realized what he was doing and let go, giving me a chance to run. I sprinted the other direction, away from where the others waited anxiously for me. I could see him in the corner of my eye, almost shouting for me to come back. He stopped himself, a disappointed look in his eyes as I continued running. Cammi screeched from half across the mansion, I was too far away from the exit, surely. "The exit is blocked! He blocked it! Chara, RUN!". I could hear the fear in her voice as she spoke to me. I knew I wasn't getting out on my own. I was greeted by a dead end in a small room. I took the wrong door! I held the door shut but realized my efforts were in vain. I finally crumpled down in the center of the room. What do I do now? I can't hide here forever...
A sob broke from my lips, piercing the bitter silence like a knife. The cry echoed across the hallways, leading me towards him. His eyes opened when he heard this cry of defeat, he sat up straight and hovered quickly down the maze. He knew this place like the back of his ghostly cold hand. I gave up on trying to be quiet and lost it right then and there. My sobbing must've led him to me in seconds. I looked up past my tears, the closed door now opened, he stood in the door frame in a gentleman-like manner. He usually would stand like this, but for some reason he seemed more... Welcoming. He spoke gently to me as he lifted his head up. "Come with me, dear.". His red eyes shone in the almost pitch black darkness, his presence making the room colder by the second. Goosebumps ran down my legs and chills spreading up my spine. His hand reached out for me once again. I stood up, knowing no way out of this. He very carefully took the back of my hand, his own gloved hands were... warm. He positioned my hand on his shoulder, grasping the other one in his own. He stepped in time, waltzing me across the room. His beats were on point.
Step, sway, turn.
Step, sway, turn.
I was confused by this sudden change. First I was about to be probably stabbed by a ghost, now I'm in his arms waltzing around the room. I felt his magic swirling around my waist down, creating a temporary ballroom skirt. It fit like a ghost glove, it's white glow illuminated the room. Sparkly diamond pearls lined the sewing down the trailing of the dress, light blue ruffles peeked from underneath. His outfit was already fancy, like it always was, so no changes were made to himself. He wore dapper clothing, something you'd see a prince wear from a fairy tale. He wore expensive looking white gloves, never showing his actual hands. I brought my mind back to reality, I realized the skirt faded off into the air like bubbles. It was kinda cute, actually. He held my hand and started walking me down the halls. I couldn't see his face, but it felt like he was smiling.
That he was finally... happy for once...
Content with me.
I smiled back to him.
He gracefully led me down each corridor, making swift turns here and there, leading me straight to the exit. He let go of my hand, I suddenly felt cold. I turned back around to say something to him-
he was gone.
"Chara! Thank goodness your okay!", I felt a pair of arms drag me back and hug me. Cammi had her arms around me, sighing out in relief. I looked behind me, confused. The exit was blocked moments ago...?
I turned back to Cammi, she saw the look on my face. "What did he do to you?..." she questioned me, like an overprotective mother. "If I told you..." my voice trailed as I looked back once again as we walked. The hallway behind us was empty, but I could feel his warm presence nearby. I finished, "You wouldn't believe me.".
I smiled gently to myself, no longer afraid of the ghost that haunted my past.
Surely this was part of his plan, to ease my anxiety. He somehow knows I love dancing.
Though I accidentally stepped on his foot once or twice.
I hope didn't mind that.
