Warning: Do not read Harry Potter and think about Cade at the same time. The result: Something like this. My first fic . . . that I'm publishing.

Disclaimer: if I owned Victorious and Harry Potter, I so would not be typing this.

High school

Cat

From an outsider's point of view, it would seem Jade hated Cat, but it was different. They were actually very close friends, but strangely no one else could see that. They had been friends practically since they were born, and Cat thought nothing would ever change that. But then, when they were 14, Jade started going out with Beck, spending more time with him. At first, Cat figured that was OK, and she eventually started getting closer to Tori. That was where the problem started. Jade was always suspicious about Tori, always wondering if she was going to steal her boyfriend, her best friend or her role. Whatever the problem was, Jade always found a way to blame Tori.

During their third year at Hollywood Arts, they started spending more time together, and Cat thought it was going to be OK. But then that terrible day, the eleventh of February, ruined everything. Cat had forgotten they could yell so loud. Beck and Jade had been so happy for so long Cat seriously thought Beck would propose or something equally romantic and sappy. And Jade just had to drag Cat into the middle of their fight. Beck was just as bad. She didn't want to get involved, but Jade and Beck were being very . . . shouty. Cat was slightly worried she'd made things worse between them. When Jade came crying to Cat afterwards, Cat wanted to shout, to tell Jade she had seen it coming all along, but instead she hugged Jade and said she would always be there for her.

Six years later

Cat

Six years later and Cat was regretting the words she spoke that night. They were sharing a flat now, and it wasn't exactly ideal, but they got by. Cat was signed to a record label and recording her debut album, while Jade had scored a recurring role on a TV show. She was the girl who always had terrible relationships- a part Jade could play all too well. Jade had been back together with Beck for nearly five years, and Cat wasn't pleased with this. Beck was a good boy really; he had just been making some bad decisions lately. Lately- as in the past seven years. Cat reached the flat and unlocked it; Jade worked late on a Thursdays. She hummed 'Put Your Hearts Up', her latest song she'd been working on and her favourite so far, and then noticed a note on the kitchen table in Jade's handwriting. 'Going to dinner with Beck. I'll be back at maybe 12:30 p.m. or later.' Cat rolled her eyes and set to making coffee.

Several hours later Cat heard a click by the door. Jade must be back early, Cat thought. That's strange; if she's going out for a meal with Beck they usually stay out all night. One look at Jade's makeup and tear-stained face told Cat things hadn't gone to plan.

"Oh my galumphing giraffes, what's happened?" This time, Cat silently added. On the outside she soothed and nodded and comforted and hugged but on the inside she raged. Turns out Beck had cheated on Jade with someone else- it wasn't Tori (this time) - and they broke up. Obviously, Jade was upset. Cat didn't get why Jade was so sad when Beck had been a bad boyfriend. When she and Robbie had broken up two years ago, Cat wasn't crying her eyes out, so what was with Jade? But then Cat remembered Robbie was actually a decent guy.

They ended up with several boxes of tissues (Jade's) and several cups of coffee (Cat's) on the table. Jade was sleeping with her head on Cat's lap. She checked her watch. It was 5:30 a.m. Cat sighed and turned on the TV.

The next day, early morning

Cat

When she woke up, it was just before Jade. She wiped her eyes and sniffed "Cat?" she asked. "You'll always be there for me, right?"

Cat wanted to push Jade off, to rant, to scream about Beck, but she didn't. She couldn't.

She sighed. "Always."
