Drabble – Wing II

Several hundred feet over the battlefield she soared, the eagles' strong wings glided effortlessly in the sky. Below her the battle lines were drawn. From her view in the sky, it looked very uneven, one side with many more men and war machines than the other. But she wasn't there for them.

She circled over his golden head, hearing his voice carry through the wind. She didn't understand what he said but heard the confidence in his voice.

He turned suddenly and rode hard to the right of the battlefield. Many followed as he led the way. She swooped down close to him and then rose again. He saw her and sat straighter in his seat.

The battle began.

From her view of the field, she saw the fighting, heard the screams of the dead and the dying. The ground was rapidly becoming red from the blood and carnage. She watched it all, keeping a sharp eye on him.

His brilliance shown through and the victory would soon be his. His enemy saw this and fled the battlefield in disgrace. She followed him for a while before she retuned to her golden man.

It was one of many battles she had witnessed and there were many more to come. She followed him to distant lands in the south and then to the east, far from his home.

She watched him victorious, saw his wounds, witnessed his tears for his soldiers. She heard his laughter, his anger and speeches to encourage his army.

She heard his wails of heart-wrenching sorrow when the one beside him died.

She watched him shrink from the man he once was, to just a shell of himself.

She left him then, and flew to the west, not knowing why. Hunger gnawed at her and she caught a snake not far from a palace she flew towards. She thought the snake was dead but it reared up, biting her in the neck as she flew by a palace window.

She heard a scream as she fell to the ground dying. She doesn't know that many miles to the east, her golden man has just taken his last breath too.

They met in a beautiful meadow. Words were not needed, as they understand each other perfectly. A young man came towards them, his long hair blowing in the breeze.

She flew above them as they met and embraced.
