Neville found Luna the morning after Voldemort's defeat looking out of a window on the second floor. Why she was looking out of a window when whole walls of the castle had fallen down he didn't know, because even though he understood her more than anyone else did, he still didn't understand her fully.

He approached her, tapping her shoulder. "Hey, you okay?"

She turned around as if totally surprised to see another person in the castle. "I'm lovely; I just caught sight of a blubbering humdinger!" she exclaimed excitedly, pointing to something in the distance.

Neville looked in the direction of her finger and nodded appreciatively as if seeing a rare and fascinating creature. "That's great, Luna. Have you had any breakfast?"

She gazed at him in that weird way of hers, as if somehow x-raying him, and at the same time not really seeing him at all. "You're being very kind," she said, almost as if suspicious. "Do you want something?"

Neville smiled, loving what an accurate judge of human nature she was. "No, I don't want anything. Well, except just to know you're okay. Since you are, I guess I'll go," he responded, turning to leave.

"No, that's okay," Luna said, and he looked at her, wondering what she meant. "I mean, it's obvious you want to stay. And I don't mind."

She turned back to the window and he joined her, looking down at the destruction covering the once-beautiful Hogwarts grounds.

"It seems so strange that 24 hours ago, we were having a typical day at Hogwarts. And Voldemort was still reigning."

"Hm, yes," Luna said absently, and he wondered if she was even listening. Then she looked at him thoughtfully and said, "You were very brave."

He smiled shyly. "Yeah, I'm just glad I was able to do my part to bring down Voldemort, and to avenge my parents."

Luna nodded in agreement, and a heavy silence fell.

Neville took a deep breath, knowing what he wanted to say, what he had come to tell her, but not how to say it. "Um, Luna? I like you. A lot, actually," he blurted out.

She peered at him intently for several tortuously long heartbeats, and he wondered what she would say, how she would react.

After what seemed like forever, she said, "I already knew that. And you're very brave and kind. So you can stay as long as you'd like."

He couldn't stop a huge smile from spreading across his face. To some, Luna's words might not have meant anything, but he knew exactly what she meant. Because he understood her, even when no one else did.
