Best Father

Shawn sat on the couch, his newborn son cradled in his arms. He couldn't get enough of holding his new baby boy. Cameron Cade Hickenbottom. He was so beautiful, so little, so perfect. Shawn loved being a daddy so much already. All of the pain in his body: his back, his knees; it all disappeared when he saw his little boy. Shawn resolved here and now that it was all over: the drinking, the drugs, the unhealthy behavior. He knew he couldn't be a good father and keep going on his current destructive path.

Smiling to himself, Shawn carried his sleeping son upstairs and laid him gently in his crib. He covered him up with a blanket and turned on the baby monitor, its twin downstairs on the kitchen counter where he could hear if anything were to happen. Taking one last look at his son, Shawn walked out of the room, thinking about how he could protect his son from getting hurt around the house.

Becca came home from the grocery store to find her husband sitting, drill in hand, by the sink cabinet.

"Do I want to know what you are doing?" Becca asked, setting the groceries on the counter.

"Baby-proofing." Shawn answered, securing the child proof latch to the cabinet door.

"Baby-proofing? Shawn, Cameron can't even sit up yet! Its gonna be a while before we need to be baby-proofing." she laughed.

"Better to be safe than sorry." Shawn replied. Laughing, Becca pulled her husband to his feet, wrapped her arms around him, and kissed him on the cheek.

"You're sweet, you're gonna be a good daddy." she said. "Don't rush it Honey, you'll be fine."

Shawn smiled and hugged her back. "I love you Becca."

"I love you too. Now where's Cameron, I wanna give my baby a hello kiss."

"Upstairs in his crib. He fell asleep so I put him to bed. Hasn't made a sound since."

"Good." Becca made her way upstairs and Shawn smiled to himself, he vowed that he'd be the best father he could be.
