Jace couldn't sleep that night.
He lied awake, staring at the ceiling.
He had told her, he had but she wouldn't listen to him. Because she didn't want to hear it, didn't want to face the truth of it.
Because she was his sister.

He mouthed the word over and over again like a mantra, closing his eyes and praying that maybe if he kept it up, it wouldn't mean anything in the end.
But he had grown up all his life knowing that closing your eyes and praying for everything to be fine doesn't work out the way you want it to.
He could hear as the word began to lose its meaning.
She was his sister, his baby sister.
Laying there and staring at the ceiling he found a new word, a word worth repeating, worth believing and thinking and praying that maybe this one would be the one that wouldn't make sense any more, that this one wouldn't mean anything in the end.
He mouthed the word so many times it ran together in a string of inevitable truths.
It was a single word, the one he grew up half his life believing it was a weakness.
Because you should never depend on anyone, never put your heart into anyones hand.
He waited, but it always seemed to just hurt him more instead of hurting him less.
Love.
Nothing happened, no dawning of realization, no giving up.

He loved Clary Fray,
And that was something that would never lose its meaning.
