One Simple Word

He said that one syllable word,

Even though it's only two letters,

It hurt more than a thousand insults,

All put together hurtfully, ever could.

That one simple word,

Meaning reject and denial,

The one word that crushed my heart,

And moistened my eyes with tears.

He said it without emotion,

Like he didn't care what it meant,

Nor did a sarcastic retort fallow,

For it hung in the air me not wanting to believe.

No, it's not that it wasn't expected,

Or wasn't feared because of fright,

It was because his approval meant something,

And I wanted so much for the answer to be yes.

I know he was lying for of I spark ignited,

He asked me to go with him,

It was me, who he had a good time with,

It could have been someone else and yet it was me.

He said no when he really meant yes,

It's what he really feels, right,

He just couldn't admitt to himself or to I,

He likes me, he does, it has to be true.
