As they stood outside, Max thought about all the things they had gone through to get here today. All the money that they had spent, all the schemes that failed and the ones that worked. All the friends that had stood by them and the ones that didn't. And she smiled. One of her rare genuine smiles. She was happy, as unusual as that was, she was actually happy to be in the place where they were right now.
Standing on the side walk outside of the diner, waiting while the sign was being hung, Max looked at the blond standing next to her. Caroline was smiling as she bounced lightly on the balls of her feet.
"Are you ready for this?" Caroline asked.
Max nodded. "Yeah, I'm ready." She said, and for the first time in a long time, she really was.
As the sign light up, Max's Homemade Cupcakes, right above the window to their new walk up shop, Max couldn't help but feel that this time was right, this time things were going to go their way.
