My dear Doctor Crusher,
I hope this letter finds you well. Allow me to introduce myself: I am an Emergency Medical Hologram Mark 1, stationed aboard the Federation starship Voyager. At the time of this writing, I have been the Chief Medical Officer and sole qualified medical professional on board for almost seven years, since Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant by an entity known as the Caretaker.
In seven years, I have expanded my programming to infinite horizons. I have developed new social subroutines and maintained friendships with the crew. I have discovered passions, hobbies, and once or twice, even love. And of course, I have had the opportunity to make fantastic medical breakthroughs based on the myriad of new species, pathogens, and technologies I have encountered here.
However, I still seek to assimilate new information into my database. Now that Voyager has consistent communication with the Alpha Quadrant, I have been contacting doctors whose work I admire with an important request.
I would like to ask if you would be willing to have your medical knowledge added to my program. It would be a painless procedure for you, requiring only a few hours of your time while your knowledge is downloaded into a computer. From there, the data file can be compressed and sent to Voyager in the next data stream. Once it is in our ship's computer, our chief engineer B'Elanna Torres and I will begin the process of adding the information to my program.
I can't promise that your knowledge will live on once we reach the Alpha Quadrant. Apparently, my program is already somewhat obsolete. I fear they will choose to decompile me; or worse, wipe my database and set me to work as a maintenance hologram on a cargo ship. To Starfleet, I am simply a machine. But I can promise you that as long as I serve on this ship, your knowledge will be put to good use treating and saving the lives of not only my crewmates, but others as well. I will carry your knowledge and experiences with me through the Delta Quadrant and beyond.
If you are not comfortable with this idea, it's perfectly understandable. However, I urge you to consider my proposal carefully. If you are interested, please send a statement of acknowledgement, as well as your data file, if possible, in next month's data stream to Voyager.
