Kate was working at this preschool nearby, so Max suggested that they have Tristan go there for his first day, knowing that he'd be in good hands. Kate was always a sweetheart and still is, so when they heard that Tristan could attend, they took up the offer. She published children's books too and shared them with her classes.
It was a Monday, and preschool had just started for Tristan. Walking in with his lunchbox and his nice bright blue backpack with stars on it, he was still very nervous about this. He took after his parents' personalities. Max and Warren were both mostly introverted and shy, so being around them made it a little difficult for Tristan to make friends or talk to people.
Tristan was unaware that he was as still as a statue, clinging to his mother's pant leg. He squeezed a little harder.
Max tried to reassure him that school was no big deal. "Baby, you'll be fine. Preschool is fun! Just look at all the fun activities there are." The softness in her voice was getting Tristan a teeny bit less nervous. Still unsure, his father chimed in.
"Listen to you're mom, kiddo. Trust me, preschool was actually very fun. Lots of neat things to do!" And to make him feel better, Warren rubbed circles on his back to soothe him. It always worked. That, and Max's singing. She would always sing him to sleep each night, and when she couldn't, his dad would read him stories. He thought he couldn't sing that well, but Max told him otherwise.
"Hey, how about this, you go into school now, and we'll get McDonald's later."
THAT caught his attention, and Max and Warren noticed.
"We would get the biggest ice cream cone there is, and all the nuggets you could imagine." He started to get jumpy, food was his weakness. And even though he did eat quite a bit, it seemed he never actually gained tons of weight.
eventually, he gave in. "O-okay, yah!" He clapped his hands and his parents' seemed satisfied with the answer he gave. they chatted with Kate a small bit, too.
"I told you so."
"What?"
"Just sayin', I told you so."
Max and Warren looked at each other in confusion, but then Max's face grew into one of embarrassment as she looked at Kate.
"O-oh, oh right. That. Warren, she betted on us getting married and having kids, funny, right?" She said soon after.
Warren's face turned pink and he started chuckling.
"I guess I owe five dollars," Max begins, still embarrassed about the whole thing. "Man, can't believe you predicted it, Kate."
Her face morphed into a cheeky grin. "What can I say? I'm full of surprises!"
