Blue Upon Blue
by Jess Angel
The ocean to my back and a cerulean sea before me. That's how we met. Blue upon blue.
An endless beach was our middle ground. Our holy in-between. Fate had seen fit to join us during the clash between war and peace. It seemed we were the clash itself: heightened destruction and reconciling harmony. It was a surprising first acquaintance. We were oblivious to one another's true identity.
Who was she to know I was the Perfect Soldier? And who was I to know she was the future Dove of Peace?
Years have passed since then.
…Who were we to know that we'd be one another's destiny?
Presently, she's in my arms, safe and secure. Her hands tug at my hair and mine run through hers. She is crowned with sweet honey while the color of soft brown earth rests on my own head.
I was once empty, but she has filled me. A tide of loneliness overcome by waves of unconditional love. The only light and darkness to ever exist in each other.
Together we are a contradiction. Opposites in who we seem. Yet the same in who we are.
A paradox in flesh.
We were fighters fighting in different ways.
My battleground was of weapons. Hers was of words.
I wouldn't trade how we met for any other. It was our beginning.
And it serves as my reminder. A picture of how we first came to be. I see it every time we meet - like it's the first time.
Her warm hand comes to lean on my cold cheek. I look down to her. She looks up at me…
And there it is again, as always.
Blue upon blue.

"There is no fear in love.
But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment.
The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
