Chapter One: The Reckoning
Harper Monroe sat on a broken-down brick wall, her boot covered feet swinging back and forth as the breeze gently blew her hair around her face, it was early afternoon and the sun was slowly making its way into the middle of the sky. The heat would soon beat down and make the day stretch on. Lifting her eyes to the blueness above her she smiled, she had made it another day and in this world that meant something. When everything first started, she had a group but then as the days carried on she quickly realized that it was better for her to be on her own. Did she like being on her own…not really but after what transpired it was for the best. Pulling her backpack onto her lap she pulled out a tiny notebook and created another tally within the pages. From an outside point of view, it would appear that she was marking the days since the world changed but in fact the reason behind the little dashes were completely different. Shoving the book back into her bag she hopped off the wall and headed down the tree lined street. As she walked, she looked into the dense forest and watched as the dead started to form and head for way. Harper didn't walk faster or even seem to be bothered, before she knew it the dead were weaving their way around her, some bumped into her but didn't stop in their shuffling. She kept her head up and walked through the mass and entered clear ground once more. Looking back, she shook her head a unreadable look flashing in her eyes, letting out a long breath she turned and followed the road in hopes of finding the one person who she has been searching for since the world collapsed.
