I was pondering the definition of a cavalier, when I came up with this quick poem (yes, poem). Pardon if it's a little rough around the edges, but it's been a while since I written poetry...

"Knight and Cavalier"

A Fire Emblem poem

by Avi

The definition of a knight:

He is trustworthy and honour-bound,
His duty is his life.
He follows orders without question.

The definition of a cavalier:

He is gallant and charming,
His attitude towards life is casual.
He is distracted easily by love.

A knight's definition of love:

He believes in courtly love;
He admires his lady, from afar... But doesn't dare to hope to win her heart,
For she is so far above his station.

A cavalier's definition of love:

He believes in romantic love;
But his heart is fickle.
All women deserve his love, in his mind,
So he will never win one's heart.

When a knight goes into battle.
He is thoughtful and decisive,
When in combat, he is focused;
He thinks only of protecting others.

When a cavalier goes into battle.
He thinks of fame and glory,
Regardless of his own safety;
He lives only for the moment.

Knight and cavalier,
So different, yet so alike;
Both are loyal and are true.
Both are aspects of one man.

BTW, when I mention the word "knight" in the poem, I'm not referring to the Fire Emblem class, but to the title (as in "Sir Knight"; heck, even Wil is considered a knight in that sense!).

And yes, I do know the term "cavalier" isn't used in the japanese version; it's "social knight" (but even then, Sain is a lot more sociable than Kent is...)
