That day…

The rain fell hard against the street, making loud slapping and popping noises, and I pulled myself closer together, shivering with my lack of warmth. My teeth chattered and my stomach growled painfully with hunger. I had been living here on the streets for a long time now, and it never got any easier. I wished I at least had one shirt that wasn't torn.

it pretty cold for June, and rain had been falling without a stop since last night…

"Bye, Yami-senpai! See you tomorrow at school!"

I looked up and saw a group of people—high school students it looked like; if I went to school, I'd be in the same grade as them. One had broken away from the group, and he was walking backwards, waving to his friends—something I didn't have. I started to cry. My life had gone from bad to worse. I had no family. I had no friends. I had no food, no job, no house, no nothing. I watched through my blurry vision as the boy—Yami—walked towards a house, holding an umbrella against the falling rain and fumbling in his pocket for a key. Right when he was going to open the door, he stopped and turned around as the sound of my sobs reached him. I saw two breathtaking, squared, ruby orbs, filled with curiosity. He walked back down the steps slowly and shifted through the bush I was hiding behind. I gasped and stared up at him, knowing all too well that I looked horrible. Tattered and dirty.

that was the day when Yami and I first met.

"Oh…" His eyes went impossibly wide, and he knelt in front of me. "Are you okay? Come on, you'll catch a cold out here…" He reached out to touch my arm, and I flinched. I quickly threw my palm at his face, yelling out.

'Don't touch me!' I thought in a rush, sense my vocal skills were limited from not talking for many years. 'I can't trust anybody!'
Yami fell backwards and touched his cheek, watching me carefully. I couldn't keep my eyes off of his, and I was asulted by the deep ruby once again. He suddenly placed his umbrella on the ground and ran away from me, into the house. I pulled myself together again.

'Hypocrite,' I thought angrily. 'You can't trick me that easily. You're just like the rest of them. Mean…'

"Go away! I don't want you near my child!"

'…and heartless…'

"Get away from us! You're stupidity might be contagious!"

'…and without an ounce of kindness,' I thought, tears leaking down my face and mixing with the water from the rain. I closed my eyes. 'That's why I hate people! I really hate them!' I heard a shuffling sound, and I quickly looked back up to see Yami holding a blanket. He moved very slowly as he placed it around me, and he gave me a cup full of some kind of white steaming liquid.

"It's milk," he said softly. "Drink it while it's warm."

I didn't move. I could only look up at his warm, kind eyes, astonished.

"You're…so small," He said, reaching out his hand slowly. "So thin. So ragged…but still so beautiful…" He placed his hand on my cheek carefully, almost lovingly. He never broke eye contact with me. "…You poor thing…"

At his kind words, I leaned onto his hand and I started to cry hardly, my tears running over his fingers. He took the milk out of my hand and carefully pulled me to his chest, wrapping his strong arms around me. He rubbed my back soothingly.

"Th…thank…you…" I sobbed weakly. I buried my face into his chest, clinging to him like my pitiful life depended on it.

Yami was so warm…so kind. I thought maybe…just maybe…I could trust this one boy.
