Disclaimer: They're not mine, I swear!

A/N: I already used this song in one of my other fics, but I really like it, so I decided to do a whole story about it. There are some similar stories out there, but I do think mine is different, so if I infringe on anyone, it's not my intention!

1 Goodnight, My Angel

He always dreaded nighttime. The all-encompassing blackness left him alone with his thoughts and memories. The stars, gleaming like diamonds against a jeweler's black velvet provided no solace from the ghosts of whispers, kisses and promises that were gone, but not forgotten.

Every night, Christian tried to forget his painful memories. Usually by his third glass of Absinthe, he was very successful. However, on this particular night, Christian fell asleep without his usual vice, only to be woken up a short time later, by what he thought was a woman, probably his neighbor, softly serenading someone.

1.1 Goodnight, my angel

Time to close your eyes,

And save these questions for another day.

I think I know what you've been asking me

I think you know what I've been trying to say.

I promised I would never leave you

And you should always know

Wherever you may go,

No matter where you are

I never will be far away.

"Lucky bastard…"thought Christian vehemently, "He has someone to sing to him. I did once…"

1.2 Goodnight, my angel

Now its time to sleep.

And still so many things I want to say,

Remember all the songs you sang for me

When we went sailing on an emerald bay?

And like a boat out on the ocean

I'm rocking you to sleep.

The water's dark

And deep inside this ancient heart

You'll always be a part of me.

The more Christian listened, the more he recognized the voice. How could he forget the way she seemed to tell an entire story with a single note? But it wasn't possible. Satine was…dead. Christian looked around frantically. Even if this was a dream, shouldn't he be able to get a glimpse of her? But his search was to no avail. The only thing that was able to break the boundary of death was Satine's exquisite voice.

1.3 Goodnight, my angel

Now its time to dream

And dream how wonderful your life will be.

Someday your child may cry

And if you sing this lullabye

Then in your heart,

There will always be a part of me.

Hot tears pricked Christian's eyes as he listened to the song. How could he let his life dwindle to this state? In fact, life did not even begin to describe what he was doing; it was more like mere survival. Satine existed now only in his memory, and he was drowning her in Absinthe. Christian remembered her dying words. He had to move on with his life, and he had to write their story. Christian now realized that he was not only living for himself, but for the dreams of his beloved as well. He would make the most of his time here on Earth, because he knew Satine was waiting for him somewhere, on the other side of all their tomorrows…

1.4 Someday we'll all be gone

But lullabies go on and on…

They never die,

And that's how you

And I

Will be…
