The mission directive was simple enough. Kill Commander Shepard. It was in the execution where things got complicated.
The Commander had powerful allies in Cerberus. Shepard's ship had impressive stealth technologies. No records of any base or frequented location suitable for an ambush. The task would be a tricky one. But that wouldn't stop us. Commander Shepard had killed three hundred thousand batarians. The Ghosts of Aratoht would make him pay the price. Our name was inspired by more than the fact that it was a batarian world that was obliterated. It was inspired by those who had died. Each member had had family on Aratoht. I, Eyon Kahd'dah, was no exception to that. My entire family had been on the colony. The Ghosts would not wait for Shepard to be punished. Some would call them 'terrorists' or 'extremists'. We would call ourselves the hand of justice, of vengeance.
It had been decided that to get at Shepard that the indirect approach would need to be taken, at least at first. Draw him into the open by attacking something, someone, he would want to defend. This created another problem. Most of the people Shepard cared about were aboard his ship. The ones that weren't were either dead or too heavily defended to capture. All except one. As a member of the Alliance army they were regularly in dangerous situations. A few exchanges of information were all that was needed to gain the location of their next mission. Now all that was left to to actually take them. As it turned out, I was going to be a major part of that.
I was chosen to be part of the two-member team that would infiltrate the complex that the unit was stationed in. My partner, Kalak, was a new recruit. We would take out its systems allowing our crafts easy access to the base. It wasn't as difficult as it should've been. It wasn't long before we had made our way to the control consoles. As Kalak worked on hacking in to disable their internal defense systems I was to disable the external defenses; turrets, shields and the like. Instead, I drew my pistol and shot him. One shot was all I needed, one shot to the back of the head. Then I turned my pistol on the external defense console. I only needed one shot for that too. I sneaked back out of the base and returned to my ship, just in time to see our forces decimated by the base defenses.
The leader was furious. I told him that Kalak had betrayed us, destroying the external defense console before trying to kill me; I took him out as self-defense. I had tried to warn them but he had fried the comm systems. The man that had recruited Kalak was punished severely while I was praised for eliminating a traitor to the cause. Myself, I was relieved that I hadn't been caught. Like Kalak, my family had died on Aratoht. However, I was not so foolish as to blame Shepard for what he had done. I had read files and reports on the Reapers, including Dr. Kenson's report of the Alpha Relay's importance. I was angry about the deaths my people suffered but I was not blind to the truth; their deaths saved countless lives, mine included. Shepard had saved the galaxy, and not for the first time. And, I hope, not for the last time. The Reapers hadn't been stopped, only delayed. They would come, and when they arrived I will do everything in my power to stop them.
