"Come on B, it'll be fun" Serena pleaded with her best friend.
"It may be your idea of fun to dress up for this ridiculous holiday S, but not mine" said Blair, checking out her makeup in her compact.
Serena made a face and thought of a new tactic to get Blair to dress up for Halloween. Suddenly an idea popped into her head.
"Would it be silly if you went to the ball as Holly?" Serena said smirking lightly.
Blair was suddenly still as stone. Serena watched Blair's shoulders tighten up, a sure sign that she stressed. Serena knew that Blair worshipped Audrey Hepburn and that her favorite movie was Breakfast at Tiffany's . If the prospect of dressing up as Holly Golightly for the Halloween ball didn't appeal to Blair, then she was out of ammunition.
Blair slowly turned around and faced Serena. She took a deep calming breath and said "Fine, but I must find the perfect little black dress."
Serena squealed and ran and hugged her best friend since kindergarten. "I knew you'd want to go B."
Blair had to admit that dressing up was fun. After stalking around Manhattan looking for the perfect little black dress and the finest pair of pearls to complete the outfit, she was exhausted. But in that 'A fine day's work' kind of way. Now she enlisted Dorota to help with her makeup and prepared to make an entrance to the Halloween ball. "This was going to be fun" she thought to herself.
"What exactly are you supposed to be S?" asked Blair as she looked her friend up and down.
"I'm the fairy godmother, duh" Serena said turning slightly to give Blair a better look at the costume.
"Huh. I thought you were Tinkerbell"
Serena laughed and gave Blair a one armed hug. Blair edged out of the hug and her eye was caught by Humphrey in a fedora and a suit. As he made his way towards them, she smirked slightly at him.
"Let me guess, you're Al Capone?" Blair said airily.
"Haha no. I'm F. Scott Fitzgerald" Dan said crossly. He had pondered on who to be for at least two weeks.
"Blair has a bit of trouble figuring out people's costumes" said Serena in a low voice.
"I heard that S" she said as they walked inside. They were the last group inside. Just the way Blair wanted it.
"Do you think you'll win the contest?" asked Serena shaking her blonde locks back.
"Of course" said Blair glancing over the crowd. There wasn't anyone there that looked as good as she did. And damn did that make her feel wonderful.
The rest of the night passed by rather fast. Blair declined to dive for apples with Dan and Serena. She did get up and dance with Dan though, which she had to admit was rather fun. He smelled faintly like aftershave, which was weird because she didn't think that Humphrey had much to shave.
Finally the announcer cued the band to stop playing. It was time to announce the winner of the best costume.
"I know you've all been waiting for this" he said pausing for effect. The crowd sighed audibly while Blair murmured "Just get on with it."
"The committee has decided that the best costume goes to…" he opened the envelope "…Serena van der Woodsen"
The crowd erupted in applause. Serena looked flustered but slowly made her way up to the stage. Blair looked sulkily at her black gloves. Serena won everything. She had really put in effort into her Holly costume.
"Don't worry," said Humphrey from beside her.
She looked up angrily, but before she could say anything he said "If it's any consolation, you're the winner in my heart"
He stared intently at her and she blushed under his gaze. It wasn't often that Blair Waldorf was speechless.
She looked up at Serena accepting the prize and she thought to herself "Maybe I'm the winner after all?"
