Sappho, Washington

Letting out a sharp whistle, he watches the tree line, his dark eyes searching.

The old wooden porch of the cabin moans under his boots as he strides to the opposite side. He lets out another sharp piercing call.

Within moments Roxy bounds into view, her feet kicking up the orange and red leaves which autumn has brought with it.

The dog arrives, wagging its tails before promptly sitting by his feet. He reaches down and ruffles her ears before heading inside. The cabin is modest, a small kitchen and living space as well as a bedroom and bathroom. He doesn't need luxuries, only necessities.

He pours a large bowl of kibble for his best friend before kicking off his boots to sit down on the worn couch. It's old but the few colourful throw rugs his grandmother had made for him as a child brighten up the small dank space. He thumbs the wool remembering her larger than life personality. He remembers the Bronx, the smells and the bustling sounds of the city. He lets out a chuckle thinking about his abuela, the fond conversations, the scuffs to the head he and his brother had received, but most of all her bursting smile. He misses her, but it's a feeling he buries.

His phone buzzes in his jeans.

"Supervisory Special Agent, Alvez," he announces as he gets up from the couch and heads back to the kitchen. He reaches for a beer and pops the cap.

"Newbie," Garcia teases through the line. "How's Washington?"

"Cold, as always," he replies, taking a sip from the long neck. "What's up, the team being called back already?"

"No, oh, sugar. Just letting you know that our team is taking a longer than usual break. You officially have three weeks to do as your heart pleases."

Penelope Garcia was a saint. Smart, beautiful and delivering the best news he'd heard in weeks.

"Great. Does that mean this is the last I'll hear of you, angel?" he teases back. He can't help it, he loves watching her flare up and blush at his advances.

She flusters for a moment. "You're terrible. And yes, that is correct. Reid will be in Las Vegas and Rossi and Lewis will be in Sacramento. JJ, Emily and I will be staying based here in Virginia if you need us."

"Roger that. I'll see you in three weeks."

He ends the call and tosses his phone onto the counter, leaning into the hard edge. His fingers thrum on the bottle as he contemplates his dinner. Roxy has already eaten and had now contently taken his place on the couch, her nose tucked between her front paws. He thinks about driving to Forks but he dismisses the thought. He needs supplies and he doesn't feel like mingling with the locals, he'd save that for tomorrow.

Picking up his keys, he pats Roxy's sleeping head one more time before heading out.

Hungry Creek Café is only a five minute drive away. He pulls himself from the truck and locks it before striding inside.

The weather had almost immediately turned to shit the moment he touched down at Sea-Tac, but he doesn't mind. He hasn't been out to his cabin for years, and the break is not only deserved but needed. He's a man that carries the emotional baggage of the job, whether he likes it or not.

He peels off his jacket and finds a booth easily enough. Looking through the menu he rubs his cheek, taking a mental note to shave before he goes back to Virginia.

"What can I get you, darl?" an older woman asks, her glasses sitting on the edge of her nose. His eyes flick to her name badge. 'Tiffany'

"Coffee. Black. No sugar. Pancakes and bacon," he replies smoothly as he hands her the menu.

"You do realise its late afternoon, and you're ordering breakfast?" Her hip tuts as she speaks, indicating she's clearly annoyed.

"Yes, ma'am. But I believe pancakes are for all times of the day," he smiles widely.

He knows he's won when she rolls her eyes and heads to the kitchen.
