Rick and Kate we're both shot, but not dead at least not yet as they grabbed each other's hands. Kate had eliminated the threat, but they were both losing blood and needed to be found fast. The thought of this being their last moments caused them to fight against death especially as they heard one of their phones ringing. They never let her phone ring long enough to go to voicemail, so that could be the thing that saved their lives. The boys could have realized exactly what Rick had about Mason's body and the incinerator, but so could Haley or Alexis. The phone rang again and then both phones rang as Rick and Kate lay dying on the floor holding hands. Holding hands kept them knowing that the other was still alive just the same as them talking when they nearly froze to death years before. Their grips remained as the door to the loft flew open with the force that both of them knew as the door being kicked in by Esposito. They must have realized that something was wrong around the same time as Rick because they brought Lanie and a bunch of paramedics with them. Lanie rushed to the Castles and realized that both were Breathing heavily as she told another paramedic to help stop the bleeding.
"It wasn't a through-and-through we need to get them out of here now" Lanie said quickly and a bit frantic. Kate and Rick were moved seconds later prior to passing out on the way to the hospital. After nearly a minute of Castles disappearing into surgery together Josh walked to the family that was now one, but five years earlier stood as two families. He stopped in front of them before realizing that he never apologize for that moment he came out of Kate's surgery room and told Rick it was his fault that Kate was hurt.
"I know the last time you were all here at once it was for Kate and that I was a total jerk, but I will make it up to all of you. As soon as news it is passed from the surgery room to anyone outside of it I'll make sure that it reaches all of you." No one in the group particularly liked Josh but they knew that he was trying to be helpful, so Jim stepped up to speak for all of them.
"Thank you, Josh" Josh left at that moment and after nearly an hour maybe two, no one knew exactly how long it was, but news came to them that the Castles were out of surgery and in recovery. The family stayed close waiting to hear that both of them were awake and alright. Josh was the next person they saw running from the direction Kate and Rick were in as he nearly ran into Lanie "sorry" Josh went to go around her, but was stopped by Jim.
"What are you rushing around for our Rick and Kate awake?"
"No they are not awake yet, but I've been sent to get ultrasound equipment for the doctor who is looking after Kate." With the sound of the word ultrasound all of them backed to a wall and sat down in shock as Josh took off.
"Ultrasound" Jim said after several moments even though he was still in shock "like for a…" he continued than froze.
"Uh-huh" Martha replied before adding to it "so Kate's…"
"Probably" Lanie chimed in from across the hall "which means Alexis will be a…"
"Yeah and… Wow" was all Alexis could say as Haley came in with coffee for everyone.
"I would have come earlier, but I figured we all needed a coffee." When no one responded Haley spoke again are they in recovery? Why are you all in shock on the floor? What the bloody hell did I miss?" No one answered, so Haley put the coffees beside Jim before leaving to find a doctor.
