Prepared
The boy piped a little bit red icing onto his cookie and set it aside, finished. Glancing over at his the young girl beside him, he grinned. The girl had clumsily decorated a few of the treats to look like snowmen and Christmas trees. The younger halfa's tongue stuck out slightly as she decorated the last one.
Danny smiled gently. When the girl had woken him up at six in the morning to decorate cookies, he'd almost been ready to slap a bow on her head and send her to Vlad. But he was glad that he hadn't. Dani had led a hard life and it was time she had a little fun.
She had shown up a few weeks ago, her clothes dirty and torn. Her face had been filthy and shadowed, her eyes dull. Now, though, she was smiling and her blue orbs shined with joyous light as she turned toward him.
"Danny?" His "cousin" blushed as she held out a cookie. "Here… I, uh, made this for you. To thank you for, you know, taking me in and everything. I mean…. Oh, just take the cookie!"
The older boy smirked and did as she demanded, taking the cookie. It was decorated to look like him. Reaching over, he tousled Dani's hair, laughing at her scowl and growled remark.
"Here," he said. "I want to show you something." He showed her all of his cookies. There were two wearing jumpsuits, one orange and one blue. One cookie had long orange hair with a blue headband holding it all back. Three of the treats lay side by side. One was decorated with a red beret, one with a white t-shirt, and one with ebony hair and violet eyes. In the middle of it all was Dani, surrounded by friends and family.
Watching, he saw her eyes fill with tears. And he was prepared when she threw herself at him, hugging him tightly.
