Debt Settled
"Come on Bones, let's celebrate!" Booth steered Brennan towards his FBI issued SUV.
After a short drive, they arrived at the diner, bickering as usual, "You know it just proves that my gut is always right Bones.!
"Whatever you say Booth."
They were sat in their usual booth by the window overlooking the street. After ordering coffee and their meals, Brennan broke the silence first.
"You know Booth, you're a better person than you give yourself credit for."
Booth looked at her like she'd grown a second head, "You've lost me now Bones."
"Last night," Brennan replied, "I was thinking about all the cases we've ever worked."
"So…"
"So, I was thinking about your cosmic balance sheet as you call it. The thing you mentioned on our first case as partners together."
Booth looked away from her then. This was supposed to be a celebration of closing another case, not bringing up lots of old painful memories for him.
"And I realised something." Brennan continued.
"Yeah, and what would that be?" Booth returned sarcastically, wondering where she was going with this. Couldn't she see how much this hurt him?
"Your going to heaven," she said simply.
Booth just sat there, mouth open in shock and staring at his partner.
At his lost and shocked expression, Brennan started to explain herself, "I know you told me how many people you've killed after your therapy session last year and so I started adding up all of the killers we've captured over our time as partners. And well, you've succeeded with more captures than kills Booth, 52 to 51, so congratulations!"
Booth just replied with a simple, "Thanks Bones. I never realised that. I did a lot of stuff that I'm not proud of and killed way too many people. Its still hard though. The memories are still there."
"I'm always here Booth. To listen, I mean."
"Thanks Bones."
Another thought occurred to Brennan. "So, I guess you don't have to work for the FBI anymore. You can retire," she said gloomily, looking away.
At her tone, Booth put on his best charm smile and catching her eye said, "I wouldn't change or give up this job for the world Bones."
Brennan looked at him, "But why? Most people would want to leave this job. Sully did."
Booth just smiled and said, "I'm not Sully Bones, I'm not leaving. Besides, I have the best partner in the whole of the FBI. And if I wasn't here, who would save your butt every time it was captured, huh?"
"I do not always get captured!" she managed to sputter back at him.
"Yes you do."
"I do not!"
"Bones, I saved you at least three times now!"
"No you have not Booth. I saved myself have the time."
"Of course you did Bones."
The only interruption to this bickering was the arrival of their food and the consumption of it. With Booth obviously finishing first due to the fact that Brennan had stolen half of his fires and just the fact that he wanted to dig a little more at his partner and friend.
'Yes,' he thought, 'This is what my life is about. And heaven, well that's just an added bonus. And with Bones going there too will be even better.'

Yes, by the way, I am sad enough to count through the episodes to see how many people they've captured.
Please review for me.
