One

The last battle had been fought, lives had been lost and families had been torn apart. Some never said goodbye, and some never really said what they needed to. Some came just in time, others were too late.

Lovers had been torn apart, but some had been brought together.

They stood hand in hand, smiling at their best friend, Hermione and Harry shared a nod which seemed to say that it was about time.

As Ron walked over to his family, one less than how it had started all those years ago, she tightened her grip on him – just so he knew that she was there; she didn't want him to forget that moment they had shared. It was evident that things would never be the same again, how could they? With one less Weasley, it was going to take time, but eventually they would get through it; because they always did.

They needed space, away from Harry, away from their friends, his family, away from all the destruction...

They went to their old Common room, somewhere they had found so much happiness and so much comfort. She walked over to the window and stared into the night, the remains of war still lingering in the air; he wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Are you ok?"

"Me?' she questioned, 'I should be asking you, you've just lost your brother."

He nodded, 'I know, but people are going to be asking me that for a long time and Im never going to be able to change my answer."

She rested her head on his chest, 'Im so sorry."

"Its not your fault,' he told her, 'why did you want to come up here?"

She turned and faced him, 'I don't really know, but this room had so many memories,' she paused, 'so many happy memories,' she corrected, 'so many times that we've laughed, or been together, its where we discussed how to help Harry or how to get past Fluffy, its just everything Ron, everything is tied somehow to this room; to me, to you and to Harry."

"We did have some good times in here didn't we?"

She nodded, 'yeah, some bad ones too, but overall they were good."

He smiled, and she noticed his ears had gone red like always when he was under pressure, 'Hermione, I don't know where we go from here, I mean-"

She interjected, 'Ron, when we were in the Chamber I thought we were going to die, and then we didn't, then you kissed me and I wouldn't have changed that for a moment,' she told him, 'every time I thought that we were going to die I was terrified that you wouldn't be next to me."

He sighed, 'Hermione, everytime I took your hand it was because I was keeping you safe, if only one of us had to live I wanted it to be you; I kissed you in there because I was scared I wouldn't have another chance."

She smiled meekly, 'this is what I want, you and me, and everything we've fought for."

He reached his hand out and stroked her face, 'I only want you, Ive only ever wanted you."

"You have me." Her lips met his softly, and they shared a small kiss, not of passion but of gladness. Gladness that they had reached this moment, that they had made it through together, safe, sound and relatively unscathed, Ron and Hermione were one.
