What was so great about having a sibling?

Carlton Lassiter huffed as his sister continued to scream in her bassinet. His mom had just brought Lauren home a couple of days ago, and already he disliked her. Being an only child, he had had mixed feelings when his mom told him she was pregnant. He was twelve and used to being alone, but the idea of having a little brother grew on him. Then Lauren was born, and Carlton lost most of his enthusiasm over having a sibling, especially when she screamed for no obvious reason.

Lauren was a fussy baby, and getting on Carlton's last nerves. His mom had told him Lauren was colicky and would cry for no reason sometimes. She was now in the kitchen, fixing dinner and listening to the radio.

When Lauren screamed again, Carlton gave up. Stalking over to her crib, he looked down at the tiny red face of his sister. "What is your problem?" he grumbled.

Lauren sucked in a breath and wailed again, waving her tiny fists.

Glancing around, Carlton leaned down and scooped Lauren up in his arms. Just like his mom had taught him, he settled her against his chest and went back to the couch to sit down. "Why are you crying?" he asked as he watched Lauren's face.

Looking slightly startled, Lauren snuffled and looked up at him.

Carlton's face softened. "I guess you're not so bad," he admitted. Now that she wasn't screaming, she was actually kind of cute.

She sniffled again, and he expected her to resume screaming. But she didn't. Instead she nestled into his arms and yawned deeply, much to his surprise. He felt protective of her, something he hadn't expected.

A few minutes later, his mom came out of the kitchen and found him still holding Lauren. He smiled up at her.

"I guess it'd be okay if we keep her."

The End.
