Nine

Grace is nine. She wants to tell her dad that he doesn't have to cover her ears, that she's heard it already, and she knows what he's saying. He thinks her mom is a nightmare and her stepdad spoils her. She knows the ring tones. Her mother is fright night music, and the lawyer is some play on a similar theme. There is no ring tone for her stepdad, and she's not sure either of the father figures in her life have ever talked on the phone or had a need to. She prefers it that way, really.

Grace is nine. She wants to tell her dad that he doesn't have to baby her. She knows it's dangerous and that's why she wants to go with him. How good will it end if he's hurt? How can getting shuffed into a bathroom with a stranger or being shuttled on home by some random police officer going to help? Strangers can kidnap you and kids in her neighborhood already ask too many questions at school. Yet, she looks up at him as he explains that he's got work to do so this nice officer is taking her home. She hugs him tight because she overheard his conversation with her mom on the phone. She doesn't want this to be their last meeting until she's eighteen.

Grace is nine. She wants to be grown up. She wants her mom to let her see her dad without throwing a variation on a tantrum. She wants to thank her stepdad for the tennis lessons without having to tell him "I love you" when she thanks him like her mother wants. She wants someone to realize that they don't have to buy her things or take her fancy places to win her over. She can remember life before her parents divorce, she can remember how her stepdad came into their lives, and she can remember what makes her mother good and her father strong before their family fell apart.

The End
