Disclaimer: Don't own, but I love the characters.

A/N: I wrote this as a short, original script forever ago, and then my muse threw a Rurouni Kenshin manga at me. After I got ice for my head and a thank-you gift of ice cream for my muse, I wrote up this cutey. Review when you're done, please!

The setting sun glinted in its golden and citrine splendor over the sapphire river. Two young people met, nearly coincidentally. The ends of the man's bright ruby headband danced lightly in the soft breeze, and the woman's blue-black diamond hair did the same. The corners of his lips turned up.

"Hey."

"Hello," she answered.

The man dug a toe into the dirt. "There's a guy I know…he sent me to talk to you."

She elegantly arched an eyebrow. "Really now?"

"Yeah."

There was a moment of almost-silence; the only sound the whispering of the emerald grass and the murmuring of the river.

"Well? What about?"

He shoved his hands deeper into his pockets. "Well…this guy likes you. A lot."

A small, apologetic smile flitted over her face. "I'm not interested in a relationship."

"I think he knows."

"Ah."

The man shrugged, his pearl-white jacket shifting carelessly over his tanned shoulders. "Anyway, he said to tell you that when you were ready…he'd be there."

Her dark lashes lowered uncomfortably. "Tell him that's sweet, but I really don't want any romantic involvement."

"I will. I'll tell him."

"Was that all?" she inquired.

"That was all," he replied, starting to walk by her.

"…Wait…" the woman added hesitantly.

He stopped, shoulder to shoulder with her, looking away. A bird whistled its last song of the evening and flew across the vermilion and topaz waters of the river. "…Hmm?"

Carefully, she spoke again. "Do I know him?"

The man lowered his head slightly. "I think you know."

"Who is it, then?" she asked quietly.

The vermilion and topaz flowed into deep, iridescent opal as the last winks of the golden sun began to disappear into the waters. It was an eternity within a moment before he spoke again.

"I think you know that, too."

Then the sun was gone, and so was he.

She, the night, was left alone, with glittering diamonds shining on the black onyx sea.
