What Was That?

Christina trudged through the thick woods as she ducked and weaved, avoiding any obstacle that got in her way. She reached forward to grab a branch blocking her path, pulling it back, while her feet sank farther into the slimy mud. With every step she took more branches would appear, hindering her ability to move. Her feet began sinking deeper and deeper into the muck. She struggled to even raise her leg above the fallen tree in front of her. While trying to bring her other leg over the log, her foot slipped from beneath her, causing her to plummet onto the squishy surface with a faint scream.

Mud caked to her delicate skin as she tried to push herself up. Christina struggled to get back over to the log as she heard a rustle in a bush nearby. Quickly, she threw her arms up as she embraced the tree for support. Glancing around, she didn't see anything, but again she heard the same rustling as before. The pounding of her heart began to make her lose focus as the sound became louder. Her eyes grew wider as a figure emerged out of the bushes, clawing its way closer to Christina.

Her thoughts were scrambled as she turned around to flee from the creature. She began to sprint as hard as she could to get away, but the mud that lingered on her made it difficult to run. Glimpsing backwards, she searched her surroundings to see if it was still chasing her. As she changed directions, she collided with the thing she had been running from. Saliva dripped from its sharp, jagged teeth as it stared at her. She let out a blood curdling scream as it tackled her to the ground. Her nails dug into the dirt as the creature clutched her legs, dragging her into the darkness.
