The elf rushed through the corridors, fear and worry etched upon his face. In his arms a smaller elf was cradled, a female elf. Her still body was draped in stained cloth and her head bumped and jostled with the elf's stride. However she did not wake.
Dobby paced back and forth furiously. The other house elves did not approve of him, and they thought even less of Winky, particularly at times like these. Winky's drinking problem of course had not escaped the other house elves notice; they refused to speak to her or acknowledge her presence at all. Dobby felt that this further hindered her ability to fit in at Hogwarts but he did not say so; the house elves did not approve of his freedom either.
A small popping noise broke Dobby from his reverie. A handle had appeared. Was this an entrance to a secret room? Dobby turned the handle cautiously and pushed open the door. It moved silently to reveal a small dimly lit room, with a miniature elf sized bed. Dobby entered the room and laid Winky on the bed gratefully; she stirred slightly but did not wake.
Dobby sat on the floor next to the bed and took her hand in his; even for an elf she had small hands. Her skin was pallid, the glow Dobby had always loved was gone. His ears drooped a little as he remembered her; she was beautiful, her smile always lit up his world. Dobby missed her.
"Dobby?" Winky murmured sleepily, startling Dobby.
"Dobby is here," Dobby replied hastily, squeezing Winky's hand in reassurance but she was asleep again.
Dobby sighed softly and stood to leave. He bent down and pressed his lips softly to her forehead.
"Dobby will make Winky all better again, not just for Winky, but for Dobby too."
With those words he strode out of the Room of Requirement, his face determined.
