"Well this is a surprise," Micaiah said. One of the palace guards had informed the queen that there was a bird laguz wishing to see her, and when he mentioned the name she had given him, Micaiah had told him to let her in. "What brings you here, Vika?"
"Oh, well, I finally got a break…been busy and all, being a liaison for laguz-beorc relations. So I came here. I'm curious…did Yune ever come back?"
"No, I think she still thinks it's best that we live without goddesses for awhile. Why do you ask?"
"Ah…I'm just wondering, with Ashera gone and Yune saying what she did about the legends being false, are beorc/laguz relations still forbidden?" The raven girl looked rather sheepish.
"I'm not quite sure I follow you. Beorc-laguz relations are better than ever, right? And you're a big part of that."
"Uh, not exactly the type of 'relations' I meant…"
Micaiah suddenly noticed that Vika's eyes were trained upon her arm, and she instinctively touched the Brand that was there, even though it wasn't actually in sight at the moment. "Oh. I would think that the stigma surrounding the Branded would have dissipated, but I honestly don't know if things have changed. I assume that you're concerned about what would happen to you, right?"
"Yeah. I agree, in this day and age, a Branded wouldn't be ostracized the way they used to be, but still, I don't really want to end up like Lehran and Almedha…I'm not really sure what to do."
"That's easy. Follow your heart."
"I beg your pardon?"
"You're afraid of what will happen, but you love him enough to risk it, don't you?"
"…Was it obvious even then?"
"I could tell that you would follow him anywhere. At the time, I didn't think that loyalty could ever develop into love, but ever since the war ended and laguz and beorc have learned to accept one another, it isn't a huge surprise."
"Yeah…I guess I'll just have to risk it then. I don't want to lose my wings, but…I really love him. I…I'll ask him what he wants to do. I wouldn't be surprised if he told me he didn't want me to risk it. But if he's willing to take that chance…"
"Good luck, Vika."
"Thank you, Queen Micaiah."
CCX: Yune's conversation with Stefan really got me thinking: Why do laguz who procreate with beorc lose their ability to transform? The myth that laguz and beorc should never mate…it's all a lie. Yet Almedha and Lehran became something that is neither laguz nor beorc, almost as though they, too, were Branded. If ever there was a couple to test this theory, that maybe the "curse" of the Branded is gone now, it would have to be Tormod and Vika. Hope you enjoyed this short story.
