NOTES: Ooh, my first RENT poem! This came out of an ongoing assignment for English class. We have to write a poem imitating Mercer Meyer's 'What do you do with a kangaroo?' Now, I'm on a total RENT kick because I saw the national tour in Chicago two days in a row, one time from the front row, dead center. Hooray for standing in line for four and a half hours for rush tickets! :D I also got the autographs of several cast members, including Adam Pascal (who never comes out the stage door), and Anthony Rapp. So... RENT poem! I don't know if this will end up being the poem I turn in... My teacher is looking for something much more lighthearted and funny... Please review!

It'll Be Okay

What do you do with a best friend,

the closest friend you've ever had

whose life is being self-ruined

whose boyfriend can't seem to trust her

whose health is in decline

who keeps too many secrets

that she doesn't know how

to confess?

You give her a hug and tell her,

"It'll be okay, chica. You'll find all the courage you need."

What do you do with a best friend's boyfriend

who keeps too many unconfessable secrets of his own

whose health is dwindling

almost as quickly as hers

who is too scarred to trust

or to love like he wishes he could

whose only constant in his life

is the crutch of music?

You give him a hug and tell him,

"It'll be okay, sweetie. You'll figure out you're made for her."

What do you do with a best friend's boyfriend's best friend

who always feels the odd one out

whose friends' problems and lives

all fall on him to observe

and relate

who wants to capture the world he inhabits

with all its flaws and beauties

who is never appreciated for his efforts?

You give him a hug and tell him,

"It'll be okay, cutie. You'll have your time to shine."

What do you do with a best friend's boyfriend's best friend's ex

who can't seem to manage

her on-again, off-again relationship

who can't seem to help straying off

but still finds herself trying to come back

only to mess everything up again

and who fights another

losing battle for her art?

You give her a hug and tell her,

"It'll be okay, darling. You'll straighten everything out."

What do you do with a best friend's boyfriend's best friend's ex's girlfriend

who can't seem to stand being without her girl

but sometimes can't stand being with her

who only wants loyalty

and respect for who she is

who wishes her girlfriend would find a way sometimes

to agree to disagree

and wishes even more that she could do that herself?

You give her a hug and tell her,

"It'll be okay, sugar. You'll work out how to work together."

What do you do with a best friend's boyfriend's former friend

who goes against all he once stood for

who moved on from his friends

to go on to

what he thought were

bigger and better things

but might have realized that it may have

been a mistake?

You give him a hug and tell him,

"It'll be okay, honey. You'll learn who you really love."

What do you do with a best friend's boyfriend's other friend

who you love more than anyone you have ever known

or will know

who always smiles when he sees you

as if you're the only beautiful thing he's ever seen

who always secretly worries about you

who knows he can't have you very long

who wishes he could have you forever?

You give him a hug and tell him,

"It'll be okay, baby. You'll make the most of what we have left."

What do you do when you can't give any more hugs?

You promise them that you'll always watch over them all

because they are your dearest friends

and you'll always be their Angel.
