Authors Note: This takes place before Nemesis, and Riker is still on the
Enterprise-E. Riker & Troi are engaged, but not married.
Chapter One:
Laura Vining Webber Baldwin Spencer felt herself spinning through an unexplainable oblivion. She woke up to find herself in the brightest light shining above her face. She felt as though she had slept a millennium away.
"Ahh," she said trying to open her eyes. "The light."
"Hey there," Dr. Beverly Crusher's face appeared under the light. She had been waiting for what seemed like weeks for her patient to wake up. "Laura? Are you awake?"
"The light," Laura repeated herself, sticking her hand in front of her face to try to conceal the light. "Its too bright."
"Oh right," Beverly reminded herself. "Computer, dim the lights."
The lights dimmed a little, and Laura closed her eyes again as she began to slowly wake up. Her eyes began to relax and adjust to the light. The disorientation was clear in Laura's face, and she took deep gasping breaths in utter confusion.
"Its okay," Beverly said, trying to ease the chaos going through Laura's mind. "You're safe."
Laura didn't know where the hell she was. The room seemed all to foreign to her. She sat up trying to figure out just what had happened.
"Where am I?" Laura sat as she sat up and realized her surroundings. The objects in the room were so new, so different from anything that she had seen. Laura was sitting in the Enterprise-E sickbay.
"Welcome to the Enterprise," Beverly smiled as she tapped her communicator. "Crusher to Cmdr. Riker, your guest is awake."
Laura was intrigued as to why she heard Will's voice but he was nowhere to be found. She was glad that at least she knew one familiar voice.
"On my way," he said in such a professional tone. Laura was so confused. Where the hell was she?
"Excuse me, but what exactly is the Enterprise?"
"I'm afraid I'll leave that to Cmdr. Riker to explain," Beverly prepared a hypospray and aimed it towards Laura's neck. Laura naturally leaned back. "Its okay, this won't hurt."
The hiss of the hypospray sent antibiotics throughout Laura's body. Laura rubbed her neck in response.
"Its okay," the doctor replied happily. "You'll get used to them."
"What did you stick me with?"
"Its called a hypospray," she explained as it sat in her hand. "Its like the needles of the 21st century, only doesn't hurt as much."
"Laura!" Riker looked pleased when he walked into the sickbay. Laura noticed the change in him.
"Will!" she said with a small smile. He came over and hugged her.
"So.I see that you finally decided to grace us with your presence huh?" Riker grinned at her.
"Something like that," Laura replied with a small voice, just as equal a smile.
"How is she?" Riker looked at his colleague, who was now scanning Laura with a tricorder.
"Well," Beverly smiled. "The disruptor wound has healed rather nicely. She'll feel a bit weak for a few days, but I think that other than that, she'll be as good as new."
"Picard to Cmdr. Riker," they all heard Riker's communicator go off.
"Riker here sir," Riker looked up at the ceiling as a response to, this is not a good time.
"Number One, report to my ready room with your guest, immediately."
"Yes Sir," Riker replied so formally. "Is she well enough to leave Sickbay Dr.?"
"Yeah, I'd say so. You gave us all a scare," Beverly said to Laura.
"I didn't mean to. I don't really remember what happened."
"Well, we'll get to that," Riker jumped in. "Eventually. Are you ready to go?"
Laura nodded, so Riker helped Laura onto her feet, and they slowly but surely walked out of sickbay.
