I stepped from the marsh, the fog billowing around me, heading toward Herot for another feast. I moved swiftly and silently up the land. The moon nor the stars dared show themselves in my presence. The way to the hall was an easy path, as easy as talking. As I made it to Golden Herot I was bewildered to see how well guarded this hall was. I find it amusing how these men think they can stop me.
I glided to the doors of Herot and stripped them off the hinges. I sauntered across the hall teeth bared, eyes wide, and ready to take life. I came to an abrupt stop and looked around at the sleeping men curiously. My stomach moaned at the sight. Humans, what foolish creatures.
I stalked up to the first man with a grin on my face. I snatched that man then tore his body apart and drank his blood greedily. I pinned this man by his hands and feet then took the very life within him with my jaws. Oh, what an exuberant night. I came to the next human, my next piece of food. I seized the man with my claws and was ready for another taste.
Suddenly, the man sprang to life within my grasp and took me in his hold. I knew at once that this man, that this lowly human was not ordinary. Somehow, this man struck fear into my very core. I desperately struggled to get out of his vice like grip. When I couldn't escape him I started thrashing harshly as prey would do when a predator claimed them with its beastly grip. I started to fight back and our mighty battle covered the expanse of this strong hall and shook with a powerful force. Objects howled in protest when our bodies collided with them.
As we continued to strike at each other, it briefly crossed my mind that Hrothgar's men were smart enough to build Mighty Herot with a thousand men's strength. Without warning, a roar of pain tore and clawed its way from my throat. The rest of the men instantly found their way towards me with weapons at the ready when they heard my voice. The swords would not harm me, for my enchantment on all human weapons held strong, and when the men noticed they attacked in a mass of hysteria. My sight met the man's for an instant and I saw unadulterated determination in those eyes.
Before I could make my move, this man of horrors gripped my arm and started pulling with an extreme amount of strength. I felt the fibers of the muscle start to strain and tear then the sound of bone snapping sang through the hall. I managed to evade the man that could harm me as if the act of doing so was nothing.
I left a trail of staggered footsteps and a river of blood. As I entered the water that lead to my home the color changed from a murky brown to a dark red. I made the way for my home and soon after the water started bubbling in a hot fury. When I made it to the safety of my home I came to the ghastly realization that this is where I would breathe my last breaths. The following morning I had enough life in me to hear the noise of merry humans. Men and women cheering, and children squealing with joy. Oh, how I loathe the very existence of those simpleminded creatures.
