Title: 'A TARDIS is For Life'
The doctor noticed the TARDIS growing on the desk in Jack's office, but said nothing. The not-yet sentient being was so young. Barely alive, yet he could tell it already had a connection with its protector and saviour. The Doctor wondered where Jack had got the piece of coral from in the first place, but he sent his thoughts to the back of his mind, having more important things to do for now. He had a world to save, after all and he couldn't think of a better man to stand beside him, than Captain Jack Harkness.
Later, he allowed a part of his mind to ponder the sentient being's potential existence in Jack's life. He could see all the endless possibilities, the timelines stretching off in infinite directions, if Jack had a TARDIS, he would have a companion. Someone who would not just die on him after a single short lifetime. Jack had lost and would lose too many loved ones over time, he needed something... someone that would not perish and die so easily. Jack needed something that wasn't delicate or frangible. Jack needed something eternal, timeless, amaranthine.
The Doctor couldn't be there all the time. He couldn't offer all that Jack needed- Something constant and reliable, a friend; someone who would look after him. The Doctor could see that was exactly what the TARDIS would become for his friend. The one constant Jack needed in a life full of loss and change. He had been through so much and yet he had lived but a small portion of his lifespan. He had so much more to live through and he would never make it without that little treasure flourishing on his desk, The doctor realised this.
A soft smile graced his lips. This was meant to be. This new TARDIS would love Jack, even more than his own TARDIS now did. With the vortex of time running through his veins Jack would become one with this new TARDIS, the way it was meant to be. He could see that now. A TARDIS was for life, and this one would love for a long time.
