The only reason Brennan knows how long she has been sitting on the cold, hard ground is by the changing light around her. When she arrived it had been warm and sunny with just a few clouds in the sky to cast shadows on the grass beneath her. As she sits staring intently at the gravestone before her, her knees drawn up to her chest, she begins to question her belief that her father will come. He is wanted by the FBI for several murders. Would he really chance coming here? But still she waits like she has all the time in the world. She needs another chance to talk to him, to find out the answers to the thousands of questions in her mind.
She senses Booth's presence before she hears or sees him. Part of her is glad he is here because his presence always makes her feel safe, like nothing can hurt her. But another part of her doesn't want him to be here in the remote chance that her father does shows up. She had asked Booth once not to go after him. Would she ask him again and if she did would he listen to her? Booth doesn't say anything as approaches. His presence alone, shows he is with her all the way, no matter what happens.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world
As Booth takes a seat beside Brennan, his knees bent and drawn a little towards his chest, he notices her body trembling but he knows it's not because she's cold. She's afraid; afraid that her father won't turn up, afraid that he will. Booth slips his jacket off and leans around her back to drape it over her shoulders.
"I'm not cold." She whispers.
"I know." Booth's hands linger on her shoulders for just a moment longer than necessary. Sitting here with Temperance, Booth has never felt a more overwhelming feeling to protect her.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world
They sit together, facing the gravestone of Christine Brennan, as the night crawls in. Large, dark clouds begin to cover the sky and the moon rises higher, casting an eerie glow all around them. Booth knows Brennan isn't ready to leave. He's pretty sure she won't be ready to leave for a long time. His arm slips around her shoulders and with gentle persuasion; he pulls her body closer to his. She remains tense for moment but gradually he feels her body relax and her head drops to the crook between his arm and shoulder. No further words pass between the pair; there is an unspoken bond between them and words are just not needed. Brennan knows Booth will sit with her for as long as she wants to stay and Booth knows Brennan will talk to him when she feels ready.
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world
