How it should've been

"Gilbert, please, don't!" Anne cried.

"I must! Anne, I love you, you know I do. I can't tell you how much. Will you promise me that one day, you'll be my wife?"

"Gil I-" she started. 'I can't marry him' she thought. 'I don't love him, he's not my ideal man! But, I can't imagine my life without him. Maybe I do, yes I do! I do love him! All these years how could I not see that I loved him?' she asked herself, as a smile came to her face. "Dianna was right all along, and so was Phil.'

"Anne?" Gilbert asked, unnerved at her silence.

Anne sat in front of an exasperated Gilbert, and her thoughts carried her away, thoughts of Gilbert. Somewhere along the way, unbeknownst to her, Anne's ideal man had changed. Her smile continued to play on her lips as she imagined being 'Mrs. Blythe, Mrs. Anne Blythe, it just sounded, right!'

"Anne?" Gilbert asked again in anguish, he was terrified that her silence meant rejection, but her smile gave him hope.

"Mrs. Anne Blythe," she said softly. "I like the sound of that."

Gilbert smiled, and Anne could see his eyes light up with happiness. "You do?" he whispered.

"Yes, I'd love to marry you Gil." Anne said, her gray eyes sparkling.

Gilbert picked Anne up and twirled her around before setting her on the ground and kissing her. For a time the mayflowers lay forgotten on the boulder.
