Years later, he still stares at Alphonse in wonder.

He marvels at his at his golden-blonde hair and his kind forest-green eyes; at his soft, shy smile.

You would never be able to tell that he was once walking on the fine line between the living and the dead. Not in a million years.

But sometimes, Ed can't help but remember everything. He can't help but remember the pain blooming in his leg, and the blue and red lights crackling around the transmutation circle as he watch his precious little brother's body disintegrate. Edward can not help but remember his desperation as he sacrificed yet another limb to the Gate in order to even attempt to save him.

He can't help but remember drawing the blood seal that held his brother onto the border of life for four years.

And Ed knows that it's a miracle that he's retained his own sanity.

But he had been so close, too close.

Because of this, Edward Elric also knows that if he had lost Al that night, if Alphonse had truly died, then there would be no doubt on his mental status.

He would either be dead or in an insane asylum by now.
