This is a challenge from the forum, Down With the Capitol Authors. The challenge was a Johanna/Annie friendship fic while they were in 13. Hope you guys enjoy it, took me a while to get it a friendship fic and less of an angst one.
Disclaimer: I do not own The Hunger Games or any of it's characters that are written by the amazing Suzanne Collins.
"You look beautiful today Annie."
"Johanna, are you trying to admit some feelings that you have for me?" Annie Cresta giggled.
Johanna Mason rolled her eyes at the bride to be as she fixed Annie's dress. "Ya Annie, that's it for sure. I am really deeply in love with you and wish that I was marrying you instead of Finnick. They were right when they labeled you mentally unstable."
Unconsciously Annie rubbed at her wrist where the bracelet that had the words, Mentally Unstable on it usually was. Today was the only day that the doctors agreed that she could have it off. Other than that she would have to wear it every other day as long as she was in District 13.
Johanna noticed the action and said in a softer and kinder voice. "Sorry Annie, that was uncalled for."
"It's fine Johanna." Annie said with a smile on her face. "I'm glad that you can just talk to me and not worry about whether or not you need to watch your words."
Johanna gave a snort. "Of course you would have that kind of view on things Annie." The two of them looked at each other and started laughing out loud, tears streamed down their faces as they laughed for no reason. Clutching her side Johanna spoke between the laughter. "What a messed up pair of friends we are Annie."
"We definitely are, but you wouldn't have it any other way Johanna." Annie said through her giggles. "No way would a normal person be able to tolerate you and your weirdness."
"True." Johanna conceded with a smile. "But it's not you're exactly the picture of normalness." Her smile vanished from her face when she saw Annie's expression. It had gone blank, but her eyes, her eyes had a flicker of pain. She reached out and pulled Annie into a hug. "Shh, Shh. It's alright Annie." She whispered in her ear. "Whatever you're seeing, it's not real."
There was a moment of silence between the two of them before Annie shrugged herself from Johanna's embrace. "Thank you Johanna. Sorry that I just spaced out like that." She said in a quiet voice. "No matter how much I try, I just can't seem to control it."
"No problem." Johanna replied casually." The two of us, we gotta stick together."
Annie gave her a confused look. "What do you mean Johanna?"
Johanna spoke as if she was explaining to a small child. "No one else here has gone through what we have gone through Annie. Think about it. The games, the insanity after it, the second games, the Capitol after that, no one here understands what we've gone through. Not Peeta, not Katniss, not even Finnick." She looked Annie in the eye. "We have to stick together and not lose ourselves in the madness of our screwed up lives. You keep me anchored here, and Finnick and I will keep you anchored."
Annie gave a shaky nod and drew Johanna into an embrace. "Sure thing Johanna. Thank-you."
"No problem girlie." She replied while patting her on the back. "Now let's get out of here. You've got a wedding to get too."
Linking arms the two of them walked out of Annie's dressing room. Smiles on their faces hiding the pain, insanity, and hurt that they felt deep down, but it would be okay. They had each other and they would keep each other anchored to reality.
After all, what were friends, no matter how messed up they were, for?
So ya, review and tell me if you liked it or not. :)
